Totally agree with both of these points. 80 just can't compare to the occupant safety of current SUV's. I believe the ARB bumper helps quite a bit but that's only my unscientific opinion.

Here is a crash test of the 80 body

Marginal my ass. This was about 70mph into a construction crane on the edge of the highway. The floor didn't buckle, my head didn't hit anything but airbag. My brother can tell you a lot more about it in this post:

Wow! ^

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety commemorated its 50 year anniversary by doing a frontal offset head-on crash between a 2009 Malibu and 1959 Bel Air, each at 40 mph. This video shows how far safety engineering has come in 50 years. The Bel Air is no doubt a “tank”, but its driver would have been seriously injured or killed. The smaller, lighter Malibu would allow its driver to walk away.

2009 Malibu, Curb Weight: 3,415 to 3,649 lbs depending on options

1959 Bel Air curb weight 3,615

they are effectively the same weight, the bel air was a mid sized car in its time and of questionable structural integrity when new much less after 50 years of rust.

IMO there is little in its class that can substantially exceed the 80 in crash survivability, you also get great reliability and sure footed go anywhere drive line. if it got good gas mileage it would be the perfect vehicle.

You guys may be right, newer is better. But my proof is in the pudding. My 93, 55mph dead hitting a parked van in the #1 lane. Walked away.

wow... I think I am going to upgrade my brakes now..
I'm glad you guys are ok..

Crash safety isn't measured by whether or not your car survives the crash, it's measured by whether or not you survive the crash. There's not much point to a car that can survive a crash without a scratch on it if the driver has been impaled on the steering colum (except maybe your family could sell the car to cover your funeral costs).

I love the solid feel of my LX .. It makes me wanna believe that my family and I would be safe in the event of an accident. For head on stuff, I decided to make SURE that I had the upper hand:
