The rubber in my crankshaft pulley, aka harmonic balancer, has seen better days (as has any 25 year old rubber). It is cracking and some chunks are missing on the outside. Does this matter, i.e. do most people here just throw the pulley back on, or relace it?

Not an expert opinion, but based on general principles - yes, the integrity and age related hardening of the rubber do matter - it's a rotational energy storage/return gadget plus damper/absorber. It works on a combination of the "spring constant" of the rubber with the rotational inertia of the outer pulley. I think replacement is in order.

Replace it.

I've seen way worst, like one with the outer ring held in place by all things, nylon wire ties, because all the rubber was gone. But i sure think this one is telling you it's time to start thinking about a replacement. If it were me, since you already have it apart, I'd just bite the bullet, and replace it now.

Im sure its much harder to separate that thing than it looks. But id be hunting a better used one for cheap if my truck. Brand new from Toyota for $180. Not nearly as bad as I thought

Brand new from Toyota for $180

Is that from UAE with $70 shipping? The best I can find in the US is $360.

IIRC there was someone on the forum a few years ago who posted up photos of his wobbly harmonic balancer as it was coming apart.
