cracked case - and Toybox and Orion Question

One thing to keep in mind that I haven't seen mentioned is you can get the orion in 3 to 1 ratio rather than 4 to 1 ratio.:meh: I've never wheeled anything but 2 and 2.3 to 1 tcases so I don't know how different the 3 to 1 is:meh:

Personally, I went the NP203 route on two of my builds(one that never got used) I like the theory of having a 2 to 1 gear ratio. My FJ55 is getting the NV4500 to NP203 to 4 speed lc tcase as mark mentions. When $$$ allows, an orion will be coming unless I find a hell of a deal on a Warden's billet case:hillbilly:

Another point not brought up on the NP203 is the fact it will add "gear slop" into the drivetrain. Seen it in action twice on 465 to NP203 conversions I've been passenger in.

As for the SM465 version of the NP203, I've had four in my possession and all came from 1974 GMs. Two dealers have verified this year for me. However, I have heard stray reports of "I got one in my 1977 GM" but not sure of the voracity of those:meh:

The 3:1 Orion with no doubler makes a lot of sense with a SBC and an H42 for most people.

Wen you ind a ten spline 465, bake sure the output shaft is good. Most that you find will have worn splines... some worn completely to worthlessness. Plan on buying a new input gear for the 203... but that will also allow you to use any 203... you do not have to search for one that is already a 10 spline input if you are replacing the input.

I have personally pulled a 465/203 combo out of a '77 chevy pickup...

What do you mean by "Gear slop"

The adapter between the 465 and the 203 is a tough one to find... they are out there... but very far from common.

Mark...

Looks like a classic torque/stress break to me.

Mark...

Is it? It didn't crack through the idler shaft opening. I thought that was the way they crack under excess torque.

My 465 is new/rebuilt so the output shaft is in good shape, I'll be keeping a lookout for a 203/465 adapter if I should go that route. I already have a 203 for a th350 so if I could find an adapter I would be set(with a new input shaft), I just would need the doubler adapter for the LC/orion case. When building the truck I setup the drivetrain as far forward as I could keeping in mind that I may want to add a doubler later. For now I'm torn between the 3-1 orion and the 4-1, it's kind of counter-intuitive to not get the deepest crawlratio I could but it sounds like a 3-1 may be more ideal with my setup.

here is a picture of the Orion with the AA Toybox mod

I really like the 4:1 orion and 2.48:1 toybox combo.

One final question for this thread.

Anybody got a link to definative news on the Toybox? Is it dead for sure? I'm about to order my orion(advance has free shipping through the weekend) and I was wondering if there would be any point for having it pre-modified for the toybox since they offer it as an option. does the modification go all the way through the case?

If the modification went all the way through the transfer case housing, it would leak gear oil something fierce....

What about a 465 rockbox to an orion ? Does AA still make them ?

You do realize that the RockBox and the Toybox are two different setup right? RockBox is an AA setup. Toybox is a Marlin Crawler Setup.

Rusty_TLC has pixs of his RockBox. They are NLA from AA.

It is wheeling season and the ToyBox from Marlin are going out the door fast and hard to keep in stock. They are assembled by Marlin himself, one at a time.

Yes I realize the rockbox and toybox are two different things. Someone else posted about the rockbox.

Dan, Actually no Toyboxes have shipped from Marlin in months. I have two friends who have been waiting for the ability to buy one for many months. Last I heard they were out of both types of output shafts so they are unable to build them.

I wonder what Marlin was assembling when I was talking to him in person on Thursday.

It was a big shiny thing with bearings and gears on the back of a transmission. It may have been a regular T-case. I know they got some things in like the Marfields.

I called marlin friday, the toybox isnt discontinued but some specific applications(which the guy didn't know) may be a year before they're available again due to parts shortages.

Only until it was empty!;)
