Yep, I really don't really care that much I guess.
One thing to keep in mind that I haven't seen mentioned is you can get the orion in 3 to 1 ratio rather than 4 to 1 ratio.I've never wheeled anything but 2 and 2.3 to 1 tcases so I don't know how different the 3 to 1 is
Personally, I went the NP203 route on two of my builds(one that never got used) I like the theory of having a 2 to 1 gear ratio. My FJ55 is getting the NV4500 to NP203 to 4 speed lc tcase as mark mentions. When $$$ allows, an orion will be coming unless I find a hell of a deal on a Warden's billet case
Another point not brought up on the NP203 is the fact it will add "gear slop" into the drivetrain. Seen it in action twice on 465 to NP203 conversions I've been passenger in.
As for the SM465 version of the NP203, I've had four in my possession and all came from 1974 GMs. Two dealers have verified this year for me. However, I have heard stray reports of "I got one in my 1977 GM" but not sure of the voracity of those![]()
The 3:1 Orion with no doubler makes a lot of sense with a SBC and an H42 for most people.
Wen you ind a ten spline 465, bake sure the output shaft is good. Most that you find will have worn splines... some worn completely to worthlessness. Plan on buying a new input gear for the 203... but that will also allow you to use any 203... you do not have to search for one that is already a 10 spline input if you are replacing the input.
I have personally pulled a 465/203 combo out of a '77 chevy pickup...
What do you mean by "Gear slop"
The adapter between the 465 and the 203 is a tough one to find... they are out there... but very far from common.
