So I recently purchased a used 91 FJ80 from Craigslist in SLC, UT and was driving down to my place in Vegas before I left Salt Lake I had a the oil changed and the transmission passively flushed.

I had just finished climbing a relatively short (<2 miles) hill and was driving on flat highway struggling to 60mph and the tranny kept shifting between 3rd and 4th gear, when it all happened. Puff of black smoke, hole in the side of the oil pan and that's all she wrote, for my 3FE with 186,600 miles on it.

So it's been in at the mechanics lot just waiting for my decision on what to do. I finally found a used 3FE in Utah that had a good service history and compression with 130,000 miles on the donor cars odometer (totalled in an accident) for $1600.

My question is besides the water pump, thermostat and A/C compressor (mine wasn't working) replaced with new at the same time the used motor is being installed, what else am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

OUCH! Thats odd for it to lose it with no warning and at that low mileage, bummer. I would like to know what happened inside the motor, or perhaps what conditions led to the failure but that's a lot of what ifs.

That is a very loaded question, what else, hmm well how deep are your pockets? You could replace all the gaskets and seals for about $300-400 in parts, clean or replace injectors $150-400, I'd definitely replace the cooling system and keep the leftovers for backups, replace all cooling hoses and oil cooler seals and hoses. the rear main is a while your there kind of thing. This list could get longer, but that's some important stuff I would do.

Make sure you check the timing gears. The cover will be easy to pull right now and check to see if back lash is in spec and nothing else is wrong in there. The cam gear is composite and some people like to swap those out for solid metal.
But maybe I am just paranoid after my timing gear issue with my 3fe...

The 3FE is still the mist bombproof petrol motor Toyota ever put in the Land Cruiser.

Something was going on. Some severe neglect happened prior to you owning it. You driving it was the straw that broke the camels back.

My mechanic is replacing all the gaskets and seals below the head on the engine.

It has newer radiator already, but I don't have any idea of the service record for the vehicle...when I got it was obviously abused, alignment needs adjusting and steering wheel also needed to be re-centered, it had some minor leaks, nothing to serious.

But now it will have a newer 3FE with a known service record, and ready to go for another 200k miles.

Any chance the place that changed your oil screwed the pooch? Was it a Jiffy Lube type shop?

It was Jiffy Lube that changed it, it was early on a Sunday morning and the only place open.

How did all this play out. Any information about the failure and how did the new 3FE work out....

I'd pull at least a couple bearings to inspect.

Also, fix the aluminum oil galley plug before it kills your 3fe.
