Hey guys, in a few days we will move from rust removal, repair & replace metal, and spraying corrosion & rust preventative bed liner underneath & inside to the paint and body phase.

Dash - the ash tray, and the glove box door, should those be color matched to the body, or should they be painted silver?

And, "IF" silver, does anyone know the correct Paint code for the silver and the silver that 'I think' should be on the backs of the seats, the 2 rectangles on each door, and the rear heater. If anyone knows the correct color for those, please let me know.

Oh, and also, what is the correct Paint for the engine? Valve cover, head, block, oil pan, starter, and so on?

Thank you!

The paint color for Glove Box, ashtray, bumper, bumperetts, outside mirrors, seat frames, etc…is pewter. There is a color code for it. I found when powder coating those components an industrial electrical silver is a pretty close match.

Engine is easy…..black on black….any quality engine enamel will get you there…I also powder coated my valve cover, oil pan, lifter cover, timing cover, flywheel tin, splash guards, etc… in black. It makes it so easy to clean…..

⬆️ what @Mark Jennings said, Hood latches should be body color. Heater is grey or black depending on year too, Gauge cluster, outside/inside mirrors-pewter.

depending on year, back of seats are black or early years are pewter.

BTW don't use "what it supposed to look like" in regards to the Red 71 for sale in the classified as another member pointed out to ya. There are better examples around here.

Ah, thank you so much! Powder coating is a GREAT idea! I did some powder coating for my bike. Speaking of which... do you, or anyone you know, and an AMAZING beautiful bike at a super cheap price? Due to Parkinson's symptoms I can't ride her anymore, and just months before the symptoms started I had JUST finished her. She's...... PERFECT. And I'm only asking $6,500 which will be a loss for me, but I can put that into my FJ40 project. If you, or ANYONE you might know is interested, let me know and I'll send a 20 second video of how she sounds, and a 14 second video of the Advanced Technology LED Headlight that lights up additional LED's when you lean to go around a curve or turn to light up the dark spot (a $2K upgrade by itself). I built it to be the last bike I'd ever own, a lifer, but then got diagnosed. See pics below:

Can anyone give me the correct Paint code for the "Pewter" color?

Have you looked in the paint and body section. There's usually discussions going on in there about the different colors that could be pewter, along with the color of the bezel and top.

Nice looking bike.

I can't remember what year your rig is but up until mid-67, the "silver" had a bit of gold color to it and some metalic. There is a Toyota paint code but no one could use that when I was looking. I can grab a pic of the mix code if you need that older color. I took an example piece to the paint shop and had some mixed up.

Otherwise I've heard that Rust-Oleom pewter is pretty damn close to the later color.

Bed liner is a hot topic and often times is just hosed on. These rigs were not exactly assembled to today's water standards. Before spraying, you are going to need to need to seam seal every single point where water can intrude top side and bottom before spraying, otherwise water will eventually intrude. Did you sand blast your tub?

Yes, they blasted and chemical washed it, and that was how they found some rust that needed to get cut out. Then they replaced it all with good metal. And my rig is a 1971, made in December of 1970.

I appreciate everybody's help and input. One more quick question, from the factory if it was, for example, Freeborn red, was the entire engine bay and firewall painted red as well, or black, or did they spray the front inner fenders red and paint the firewall black?

Yep. The whole thing was sprayed top color. Even the underside.

Oops. I probably should have asked that question a week ago, and I could have had the bed liner on the underside of it sprayed red. But, I figured it would show less road grime, grease, oil, and other stuff off the road if I did it black. If I get too worried about it I can have him respray the bottom side. with the bed liner in the Freeborn Red. The red that he sprayed on the running boards and inside looks great! AND, I'm not building one to take to concourse car shows to be judged. I'm building one to drive and enjoy, take my boys fishing in, go to the beach, and maybe a little off-road fun. So I probably won't worry too much about the underside color.

Yeah I wouldn't worry it!. That's just what is was born with. Get it running and enjoy it; we only have so much time on terra firma.

Amen to that, and some of us less than others. I've been on borrowed time for a long time! LOL
