Cool Vanilla 80 overhaul

Been along time since I've been on here and alot has changed. The truck is almost done just gotta paint up the flares and grill, etc small stuff and rear bumper and done. Bad part is I have to sell it. :crybaby: We need a full size van to help get our 80 yr old parents around and we have a really nice sunfire we bought new I had planned on selling and get a van. Well over the holidays the sunfire got took out by some chick texting. And to make it better we cant find any ins on her kia or in her name period. And we only had liability on the sunfire cause didnt really plan on using it but I went and got in over my head on this project. So thats where I'm at. Pretty bummed out I must say. But you have to do what you have to for your family.

This I have learned. I may have put my blood and sweat into this project and someone else is going to get the bad ass of my dreams truck but its ok. The off road gods know I did the right thing and will bless me later down the road with another lc to love. I look at it like this, I saved this one from being on the cash for clunkers list to bringing new life for someone to enjoy for many many years to come. And had fun doing it. Things could have been much worst.

What do you guys think a fair price is? I'll post it here of course but craigslist and the front yard. Try local before fleebay. There are almost zero for sale around my area so bonus for me. But the downside is, when there is one its usually like 3 grand and is so so. I need more than that but it aint no 12 grand truck either and I know that. Feel free to post whatever. NO ones going to hurt my feelings. It freaking ugly. But no one else has one like it! I never planned on getting rid of it but you can crap in one hand and you know the rest. Thats how I'm feeling about it. I'll post pics when I have a chance.

Good Work, Mate!

Bro, you did a great job with focused determination & prolific effort and I am personally impressed with your LC project. Pat yourself on the back for thinking big dreams and making this vehicle happen...While the neighbors were watching late night TV, and sleeping their lives away, you were wrenching tools, grinding rust & spraying paint... saving a old school Landcruiser from the China- bound scrap yard ...Awesome! This is a example of the late night determination and stamina that made America great...back in the day...before we as a nation got too fat and lazy.

Now don't be bummed that you need/should sell the rig...it's a tough decision now, but family should come first and down the road better opportunities will present themselves...they always do!

Additionally, you've learned a lot from this project, about yourself, painting, ect, and and you are a better man for it. I, and a lot of other MUD members, salute you!

Thanks for the inspiration and saving the 80 from the Clunker Pile!

Happy New Year !

Sorry for your luck. I know in Oklahoma if a driver is in an accident and doesn't have insurance they suspend their licience until they pay for the damages. Doesn't do much good since if they don't have insurance they likely don't have money either! I carry uninsured motorist coverage for this reason, that way if I'm not at fault, even in my crusier that doesn't have full coverage, I'm covered.

Was really watching the rebuild with interest, and was digging the sushi boat color.

If the paint and body looks as good up close as it does in the photos, I'd put it up for 8K. See them in this milage for less, but 14+ year old paint jobs are looking haggard by now on most trucks, so your's will look stellar in comparison. I'm assuming all the mechanicals are good of course. But what the heck do I know, I put my truck up for $7500 a year and a half ago on craig's list and never got a single call. But my paint looked bad w/ a few dents here and there.

Well we have found a way to get the new car we needed and keep the 80! I now have 5 cars in my driveway right now and only 2 road worthy (starting to show my native american hillbilly roots) but it's ok for now. Ins. company is shafting me over the sunfire but thats ok, I've accepted it. Many curse filled conversations but I accept it. So heres the new plan. I don't like the color so it's gonna get changed. again. And I'm on the fence on a diesel transplant again. I've got it tore back down, again, and just trying to figure out the right color and I'll be back on it hard. The problem I have with the color on it now is in full sun its pink. No getting around it. looks orange in the garage under the lights but as soon as I pull it out in full sun, pink. I was ok with sushi salmon or orange but not pink. And if I color sand it down I get a great orange but loose all sheen and gloss. Remember its industrial coating I'm using not car paint. So I've been combing the forums looking at every 80 on here. Anybody know if there's any pics of 80's done in the fj blue or red or yellow? The idea of going "retro" in tribute to the originals has me going. I love all 3 of those colors and I feel I want to stay with a brighter color after going from the steel color to the color it is now. Really shows off the lines I think. Oooh well thought I would throw that up here and start posting a few pics of the new paint job when I get the paint color figured out. again.

Glad you can keep it with all the work you put into it. Well worth it.

I have that one on my bookmarks bar. Good thread. I hadn't looked at it in a while and that last or newest truck posted looks great. Love that color. Wish I had and knew photoshop. I'd be blowing up that thread. I have a ton of color ideas in my head. I've had some time just looking at and dreaming about my truck over the past few mths. I have a cool rack/ladder idea I'm gonna fab up for it as well. I was bummed but not anymore. This whole little new car ordeal has got me more excited than ever over my truck.

Decided on a color today. Again. But its final this time. I swear. My 80's new primary use is gonna be, spare/bad weather car, family camping/expo rig maybe 2 or 3 trips a year in the summer, and #1 use- towing my 14' enclosed trailer and race bike around 9 weekends this summer so it only makes sense to try and match everything up. So I took a piece of my bike to the paint shop and they should have a few gallons mixed up by the end of the week for me. I guess its a scarlet(?) red. I'm undecided if I want to paint the flairs, mirrors, and door handles in the red or a flat or semi gloss black. I gotta strip it back down so I'll have a "few" days to ponder on it.

Heres the only good pic of the bike I have to show you guys the color.

Id do the black accents on the truck you mentioned... it would match your bike, and that would be rad. You should paint your trailer red and black too!

The trailer is all black. I just have to figure out how to incorporate the red in it somehow. But thats exactly what I was thinking with the black accents.

Paint the middle hood flat black too.

I got motivated and cut out all the jams and inside of the doors tailgate, etc. I couldn't be happier with the way the red looks on it. Its a nice deep and rich red vs. a bright and hard red if that makes any sense.

Nice work. Can't wait to see it done. You got skills

It's been a while since I posted here so thought I would give an update. the body is red and just have to spray the doors, flairs and couple of little odds and ends and she's in paint. I started a new buissness building vintage cafe' bikes and other customs so it got put on the back burner for a min but its card has been pulled and I have the next 2 weeks to button her up. Should be plenty of time if all the bolts for it are still where I left them

Just read your whole thread. Nice work.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of your progress.

Good on you for being persistent and finding a way to keep the rig and finish what you started.
