Got my birfs back from the machinist...great job as always from this guy here in ABQ....former GE Aerospace machinist.

Anyway, just waiting on some parts from IBCRUSN and everything should be going back together soon. Finishing up my front end job with the new hubs and the birfs Saturday.

Beno, using the knowledge and research you put into this, do you think it would be possible to swap the internals of a HF2AV case into an HF1 PTO case? I like the handling characteristics of the stock US case, but I think it would be interesting to run a hydraulic pump off a PTO case.

To be honest Adam, I have put the schematics from both cases next to each other (the HF1A and the HF2A/V) and they are really, really close dimensionally. I just don't know without having each case next to each other and pulling them apart and actually doing a test fitment.

That said,I really would love to have an HF1A with the PTO adaptor section near the front input. It would be way cool to get that in an 80 series.

I'm toying with the idea of participating in the group buy of the AA conversion kit. It seems this would be a cheaper alternative.

Do they both end up the same? (in terms of strength, efficiency (no extra gear loss?))

Roughly figure on the following:
30 spline hubs (market price)
Hub gasket
Tube of FIPG or gray high strength RTV (brand name escapes me)
Gear lube

For the welding the actual work can be done w/in an hour after preheating the case.

Ok, so basically just a few bux plus the hubs and welding costs and something for the spline groove machine work. Definitely cheaper than the AA option.

To elaborate on Kris's list:

If you are going to rebuild your hubs, you will also need the hub o-rings (x2) and some wheel bearing grease (though I think at this point all of us have tons of this crap around).

Locktite 242 is necessary for almost all of the xfer case bolts going back into the case on re-assemble.

Abrasives and cleaners (for the metal bits--want them to shine).

I might be doing some other "while-I-am-in-there" stuff as well (rear output seal/dust cover/bearing/front input seal).

I like the idea of keeping this factory-style and using red FIPG. But that's just me.

If you bugger up any of the bearings on reassemble you will need to repurchase those, or any of the snap rings that keep gears within play tolerances--those will need to be repurchased.

That's about all I can think of really--and your own time--whatever that is worth.

Another thing to think about: I haven't put this back together and done testing to it, so in reality, I do not know if my xfer case is going to blow up or not. But I think all is going to be well and everything will be fine in the end once I have it back together. The Mark's spool is a tried and true, nicely designed spool from the market place. This is engineering for the DIY guy.

Onur, those diagrams sure make it look promising! Thanks for posting them. Some interesting differences too (separate shift forks, difference in rear extension housings, oil receiver). It would be interesting to find a similar diagram of the HF2AV as well, although my understanding is that the only difference there is a larger rear extension housing. I also found it interesting that they show the HF2A as having the PTO option or a cover plate, but no mention of the solid side case like our USDM cruisers.

Does anyone have access to a HF1A and a USDM HF2A or HF2AV to compare?

After doing some more reading of the Land Cruiser Chassis Supplement manual that you had mentioned in this thread (https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-...-these-80-series-factory-service-manuals.html) it appears that there is a HF2AV with a PTO option. If that's the case (no pun intended ) would it not be as simple as sourcing the correct PTO-friendly front case and PTO and then swapping the current USDM internals/rear plate/front & rear extension housings over? Time to start looking at the foreign EPCs some more!

Good luck finding that in the US or in Canada.

Best bet is to try to find one in Australia or South Africa.

Or, better yet, just get a HF1A.

A bit more work done this evening.

New OEM long axle shaft, new OEM 30 spline short birfield, and rebuild USPS. I decided to replace the 215K inner axle shafts with new ones. Might as well. I have yet to break one (knock on wood) and they are reasonably priced (I bought the long as a spare about a year ago). Old ones will go in as trail spares.

Short side goes together tomorrow. I will be using one of my machined long birfs on the short side. The short one on the long side fit perfectly. 238.5mm is the key.

Very cool to be able to spin the wheel with it on free and then not be able to turn it at all with it on Lock.....

I have to say that the manual hubs and steel wheels are really, really, really sexy on an 80 series.

Last piece of the puzzle will be the xfer case. Maybe next weekend.
