How thick is that ring? It almost looks like on of the shims for the t-case oil pump that fell onto an odd place when you pulled it apart. If it's shim thickness, you need it for sure, just not there. If it's thick like a washer, could it have come from the VC?

IIRC it was ~3mm and retains the VC into the tail shaft housing. I left mine out as well when I finished my part-time install and haven't had any issues. I don't have a copy of the transfer case manual on this side of the globe so I can't post the component view.

Well what fell out is definitely an adjusting shim

Ok--That is totally required. There are usually 2 thing shims on the face of the oil pump. They are easy to not see or loose.

It does not fit on that shaft. It fits on the face of the oil pump. You can stick it in place with some grease when you assemble.

Glad you spotted it.

bumping the thread...I'm getting ready to do this mod as well as install my Marlin gears.

The thread is invaluable and I appreciate beno and IBCRUSN for their documentary. As detailed as it is, I still have a couple questions:

1 - the "spacer", I didn't see the outcome of what was used and/or the size of the spacer.

2 - the whole "button" thing, can't the stock piece be used instead of having to have something new machined?

I've got the hubs, a fresh set of new Longfields and I'm ready to do this, just hope I can pull it off without too many hickups along the way...

Onur is running a UMHW button I had machined in place of the original metal button we were going to try. We decided that having a chunk of metal next to a spinning shaft even if lubricated may cause an issue down the road.

There is no stock piece(s) that can be reinserted to keep the forward shaft from migrating aft, those parts are removed from the center diff. The button inserted into the diff cross shaft ensures the forward drive gear stays where it should with proper spline engagement.

I don't have any info on this computer regarding the button and I won't have access to my desktop until I get home next month. I'm sure I have something on that computer with the proper specs so you could have one machined.

BTW, even though there is a write up on Pirate, document your Marlin install and put together a thread. I know I'd appreciate seeing one done here on MUD.

I clearly got confused by the "button" and "spacer", thanks for clearing it up for me.

I'll document what I do the best I can. I'm hoping to knock both tasks out so I don't have to take things apart twice.

Thanks for the reply, didn't realize you were on the other side of the world, stay safe...

I think I still have the trial metal spacer at home. I can try to find it, get some dimensions and pics for you.

Here is the "test" spacer Kris machined for me. I tried to get all of the major measurements in these pics. I can send this to you if you want to model it.

All measurements are in mm.

Great, thanks Onur for giving those specs. I'll see what my local machinist can work out before I ask you to send it to me. I really appreciate the documentation and guide for doing this mod, time to head to the machinist with specs and birfs in hand before I pull the transfer case out...

I can CAD up a drawing for you if needed. I go by Onur's work every day so I can grab it.

I think I have one or two spare UHMW buttons at home if you're not in a rush to get it done. I should be back in KS the first week of May.

Rush? That's a relative term around my project list. I've got a set of e-lockers I'm swapping onto it, 3rds are re-geared w/4.88's but not installed yet, doing PM on both axles, installing an OEM snorkel and doing this work to the transfer case. That doesn't count building some sliders, the spare tire/jerry can/cooler carrier.

Without making too long a story and hijacking this thread, I bought it for my daughters to drive as their first vehicle. My youngest is finishing HS soon, so I get it back to make it into my Exped rig.

So, I may still be up to my elbows in this thing by the time you get home. I'll see what the local machinist has to say when I show him the pics/measurments from Onur.

Thanks for the offer and I may take you up on it if things take longer to get done than I have in my mental game plan...

Are you needing a model of that spacer?

*Edit* Attached a PDF based on Onur's measurements. If anyone want's the solid model (.igs/.step/whatever) just let me know.
It's late and I'm tired, so let me know if I missed something....

Thanks for the offer Onur and the great .pdf file Tim. I'll take the drawing and the outer Long's to the machinist on Monday to get that work done. I've got all the other parts needed, just need to follow the directions on the thread. I'm also swapping in re-geared (4.88's) factory lockers at the same time. Lets hope she won't be down for too long...

Very nice file Tim.

Hey Kris-- can you double check this file against the original ones you made?
