That Deere is nice!

Not to mention the 4bt is popular mainly because they can be obtained for cheap and they are readily available.

sounds like that engine would be good in a rock crawler ... nothing else.
Here's one some of you fellow diesel enthusiasts might appreciate.
Yes, I like the truck. But I'd never want that engine in any of my vehicles.

I think the 4BT is a terrible choice for a rock crawler. You need something with a wider RPM range and fast reving to get you out of sticky situations. That's why most people run V8s ......Besides, the 4BT is waaaaay too heavy.

The RPM range argument is irrelevant. Many people use B series engines over 5000 RPM. Overall the B series Cummins is the most versatile diesel made. Stating they're only good for sub-2000 RPM driving or have a 1200-1500 RPM powerband is not true at all. I'm helping a friend install a 4.5L 250HP commonrail RGT 4BT into an Excursion. The engine is smooth and quiet as anything else and pulls hard to 4000 RPM. Brand new from a Cummins dealer his engine was about $5000 with about another $700 in performance parts. My point is a lot of people are 4BT clueless. "4BT's are awful" is kind of a ridiculous statement since "4BT" covers such a broad range of different, yet physically interchangeable engines.

Georg, I do agree with you on the rock crawling point. I want a quiet, fast revving fuel injected V8. Diesels are best for DD, utility, hard work. The features that make them tough and efficient make them a poor choice here. Use the diesel to tow your rock crawler.

To make a full circle here and return to the OP's question- My recommendation would be a 6BT Cummins for an FJ62. Lots of different 6BT's from the simplest 12 valves to the latest tech commonrails. A Dodge engine with a few aftermarket parts bolts to the existing transmission and will work pretty good with a basic, common sense install.

Regarding the rev limiter, my 6BT tops out at 2800, but there are aftermarket springs that can take them well over 4000.

I dont do any rock crawling up in AB, but idleing down rocky creek beds or trails most folks that have diesels really like them for that, they seem less likely to stall if you let it cruise at idle, they burn alot less then a gasser at idle. With this motor I tend to not use low gear, and will idle alot of the rocky creek beds in second or third. Im a little paranoid Ill be braking things if I get heavy on the skinny pedal though when Im in 4L .

Mind you, in the muddy stuff, if I get up a gear and get the turbo spooled it cleans the treads pretty well, but it may also be breaking traction to some degree. With a DennyT fuel pin in it it makes alot of smoke if Im spinning tires in the mud, and someone usually comments about it.
