Running a 79 fj40, desmogged, with Weber 38 carb. Tired of rough starts, and heavy exhaust fumes all the time. Checking for exhaust leaks, and doing carb tune, valve adjustment tomorrow. Drive about 2000 miles/year. Plugs are 2 years old.

Did a warm compression test today. Here are results. Do they look ok?

Take a look at the plugs, anything look not normal?
Due to oily oil on most of the plugs, should I replace valve stem seals?

The white insulator on #6 looks like an intake leak. The whole set are getting oil, or burning rich. The compression numbers look good (ish).

Do you have a header? You can look and see oil dripping down the valves with the intake off.

Is the 38 with manual choke? Do you have a sense of how it is jetted?

You can clean the plugs in gasoline and a soft wire brush to restore your spark.

Is your distributor fully electronic? Does your cap or rotor show wear? Do you plug wires have tons of resistance?

Running a header. Going to replace manifold gasket later this week, so I'll take a look for oil dripping past valves.

The 38 is electric choke, which isn't working currently. Butterflies are sticking. Taking apart and cleaning this week.
I'm at 1000' elevation.
Main Jets: 155
Air Corrector: 180
Idle Jets: 55
How do you tell if the dizzy is fully electronic ? No points, just rotor, which looks good.
I will check tomorrow for resistance in plug wires.

when I took the carb off the intake, I noticed 1/8” of fuel sitting in the bottom. Is that normal, since I’ve been messing with carb,
choke, and linkage?

Ok, Thanks.
Finished carb rebuild. re-tuned mixture screws, and idle setting...using vacuum gauge.
Finished valve adjustment....using engine running method.
Gonna reset timing tomorrow...using vacuum gauge. Looking through inspection window, appears to be between line and BB, so around 5-6 BTDC?

Vacuum gauge, at idle, running 17, and steady, with air filter on.

Now vacuum setting solid at 19 ! But still running rich, black soot coming out of exhaust. Gonna check float height adjustment.

give it more advance, desmogged they like much more than originally given. you're going to need to play with jetting in the carb to clean the plugs up.

ended up with timing set so the BB is just below the window pointer....almost touching....so thanks.
Pulled intake and headers, definitely had an exhaust leak at #4 & 5 exhaust ports.....Visibly all black soot above seal. New gasket going on tomorrow.
