1KD mechanical Injection.
Looks like a VE pump and seems they may be using the KD injector bodies. Not sure how they they altered the the injectors to become mech injected, defeating the electronics in the injector.
Just found this thread. Really cool stuff, I thought about buying a 1KZ in the states here, then later making it a 1KD hybrid with a mechanical pump or get crazy and go to a standalone ECU($$$) to tune the snot out of it. 1KD half-cuts or engine packages aren't cheap, but I did manage to find a half-cut for $3200USD with all maintenance documents and only 110k miles on the clock. Of course shipping is about $1k. I found a chap in Tas selling a Hilux for cheap, so I bought it, and now planning to import the half-cut for my own swap into my 88 4Runner/Surf.
Have you mentioned what mechanical IP you are using? I read that the VE Pumps by Bosch are very robust and cheap to rebuild. I believe the Mitsu 4M41 came with a 2.8 Mech injected diesel and that pump is suppose to have a bunch of headroom for the 1KD. I read it bolts on with little modification. I like the computer control for optimizing efficiency in most conditions, but the simplicity of a DI engine and a few wires to make it run is really appealing.
That would certainly make a good project for you! I have a 14B dyna rotary pump, with a Bosch boost compensator. It is a knock off of a Denso pump, which is a knock off of a Bosch pump. It has a 12mm plunger, which is the largest of any rotary pump so it should push more than enough fuel.
Those injectors certainly look interesting, I wonder what they did to them.
I know of one example of a 1hd-t being fitted with 13mm plungers
I've read lots about the toyota diesel, but we only got the 2L in small quantities if I recall. The idea of a ve pump on a 1kd or kz is very appealing here in the states because I understand that the parts are more common to other diesel IT'S thus making rebuild kits and parts more available. The research I've done on the interwebs claims that the Denso pumps the toyotas run are unheard of at common diesel mechanics. Again this is what I've read, I have no first hand experience.
