That feeling of " a lot more bottom end torque" worries me for you. Too much advance and too much fuel and boost at too low an rpm sounds like a crank breaker combo. I'm a little paranoid about cranks lately mind you, but it's something to consider.

Nah it's not too bad. The torque comes on about 2k and builds to a nice strong pull from 2200-2800. It never really comes on too aggressive. It pulls okay below 2, but doesn't boost much.

Admittedly, I would be very amused to see something fail on this engine considering what it's been through.

I don't mean so much now after your retarded timing. I meant previously. If you really picked up that much bottom end, it must have been taking a pounding before.

Okay, so I have a bit of an amusing update! I got really bored the other weekend (Always a bad thing!), and with only a week of rego on the Hilux left I decided to pull the head off.

A couple years ago, after I made the intercooler piping, I cranked over the engine, and it locked up solid momentarily, then continued to crank. When I started it, it made a distinctive rattle, like a valve had hit a piston. Heard it a lot on engines that had snapped cambelts, and figured i'd be up for a valve and head work. Anyway to cut a long story short, it cleared up after a minute and had ran fine ever since, even had 440psi compression on all cylinders!

So here's the good part. Not only did I see a mark on the piston from the valve on one cylinder, but a welding dag or a bolt had gone through it to, left a lot of dents and marks all over one piston and the head. The bore's are also extremely glazed, and the rings are very soft. I think that the engine had been hot in the past to cause that, as it had a new head on it when I bought it.

Anyway, some pictures to laugh at. Though they look a lot worse in real life than in the pictures!

And now, for the even better part, guess what I am trying to do :-D

Ohh. DI conversion. Cool. Might check the valve seat on that beat up piston. I had one fall apart and it did exactly the same thing as yours. Very hard to tell with the valve seated though. I too thought mine was FOD, but twas not.

IDI to DI conversion!! Very cool. I look forward to seeing how you do this. Are the pistons from a KD engine? Will the KD head fit on the KZ, or are you going to somehow modify the KZ head to eliminate the pre-cups and have direct injection? I've thought about doing this same thing before too...and did not know it was possible.

I owned one of these engine, and through all my searching the internet for info on them, I think this is the 1st pics I've actually seen of the insides!

Gerg, I did take the valve's out and the seats are fine. The 1KZ and 1KD engines share the same crank and block. I have a new set of pistons I bought for my 1KD that I was rebuilding, but turned out the block was badly worn so it would have needed a rebore. So I have fitted the 1KD pistons and rods into my 1KZ. The head bolts straight on too, and the exhaust pattern is the same. The biggest issue is injectors, with the 1KD being common rail. I read of a member on here using 1HD-T injectors that were machined down, and I have one and it'll definitely fit without a problem. Injector line's won't be a big problem, and I have a good idea on making some clamps to hold the injectors down too. It'll take a while to get it complete though.

I just realized something with Toyota's engine numbering system. The 1KZ and 1KD compare similarily as the 1HZ does to the 1HD (Z = IDI, D = DI). The 1KZ and 1KD are basically the same block, but IDI and DI versions of each other just like the 1HZ and 1HD. Of course in the case of the 1KZ and 1KD they are both factory turbocharged. Very cool, I had always thought the 1KD was a completely new engine design. Now I just wish there was a DI engine that compared to my 2L so I could convert too...haha.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this all works out. You are essentially making a non CRD version of a 1KD (But with a crazy turbo system).

That sounds pretty promising fitting all the stuff. How bout the injection pump? I guess it actually was FOD. Pretty rare you see that.

Yeah that's it. I'm pretty certain it was when I fitted that intercooler, I reckon I might have had a welding dag go through it or something similar. Oh well, it's pretty funny really! As for the injector pump, The one I have should do the job fine. I'll put the 14B timing spring back in, and probably set the timing spec to whatever the most retarded DI timing spec toyota give. At least then I shouldn't be stressing things too much while I work out the tuning side of things. I'll also fit the standard CT12B turbo to help set it up easier.

Yeah that's right, Toyota and their wierd engine codes.. just like B engines had a 1 at the start (like 3B to 13B). Yeah I'm really lucky that they are so similar, and more lucky that I have an entire engine for donor parts. There will be some tricky stuff, but I've seen one member on here get one running like that, So I have no doubt's I can do the same.

That's very cool! It probably has something to do with there being no 1KD engines imported in legal vehicles yet, but I was also under the impression it was a ground-up new design from the 1KZ as well. There's one guy in Calgary that was swapping one into a Tacoma, but otherwise they are very mysterious.

Oh yeah, I always forget that a lot of you guys didn't really see any of these engine's. As you say, aside from the odd conversion there wouldn't be much around.

You'd have to import one from Thailand or Europe as they got the 1kd first. Japan I think kept the 1kz quite late.

I am in Thailand now, want one brought back in a suitcase GTS? Lol... I believe there are lots around here from what I see, lots of the guys in the commuters and such are running them hard.... Loaded van with 9 people and almost racing around the streets, it's quite fun to watch

Would love one, sure! Haha. See any cruisers in Thailand?

I've seen one 80 and maybe a 100 or a 200?

Other than that it's all been Hiluxes, Commuters (pass van) and the Fortuner, which shows having a 2KD and VNT turbo?
