Clutch noise

So I originally thought this was a tranny issue a few weeks ago, but came back last night. I had the 40 sitting in the street and was able to duplicate it. Truck has to be warmed up and its only when you push the clutch pedal down. It seems shifting the tranny makes a difference in the amount of noise which I don't really understand. Clutch works normally otherwise and hooks up good no slippage. Clutch is a new Excedy Marathon checker clutch, new pilot bushing, new throwout bearing and flywheel was resurfaced. I think the throw out bearing is going bad? Any one heard this noise from a clutch?

The video is set to private, but I believe if it was the throw-out bearing, you'd only hear it when the clutch was disengaged (i.e. - idling in neutral). I believe that my throw-out bearing has been making noise since I bought it, and it goes away if you step on the clutch.

I put it in as per the instructions and paid a lot of attention to that part of it being the one that I removed the clutch plate springs were contacting the flywheel bolts and the clutch was slipping so I am sure it is installed correctly. I have about a 1000 miles on it.

It's either a bad throwout bearing or the clutch plate is in backwards.

That does sounds similar (albeit louder) than the "chugging" I get from the T/O bearing in my truck. It's strange that it's the reverse (only when the pedal is in) but I assume totally possible...could it be out of adjustment? Too much travel when it disengages to the point it's running into something else?

Rest of the video is entirely pointless - taken for a guy who wanted to know what a V8 "sounded like."

Does sound similar. My pedal ht is good and I have about 1/4" of free play at the fork. What else limits that travel? I guess I can check that by just pushing in the pedal a few inches and see if I can duplicate it? Looks like I may be pulling motor soon to look at it!

I'm totally spitballing - because I have not pulled my engine to fix my own clutch yet, but maybe if the clutch slave pushrod is too long you're physically pushing the clutch into something else? I'm guessing not because this would most likely cause shifting problems which you don't appear to be having.

Does your bell housing have the removable inspection cover? If so, you could pop it open, then have someone else sit in the truck and actuate the clutch while you take a look at the clutch and see if you can see what's rattling.

Yeah it does and everything looks fine. Clutch to flywheel bolts tight, can spin throw out bearing by hand with engine off and nice and smooth. Had wife on clutch and I was right there but can't tell what's doing it. I will take it out tonight. As far as clutch travel this sound comes and goes, you would think it would be more constant if it were going to far.

Would a bad pilot bearing do that?

At this point maybe! They come out hard so I would find it hard to believe that sucker is spinning in the flywheel!

Well was fine for about three months now it's back. Took it on a longer trip doing 60 and it came back. Almost seams like when the tranny gets warm it happens so not so sure it's the clutch. The sound gets worse when I shift from neutral to other gears so that makes me think tranny. Everything still works when it happens just noisy!

I work on pump motors for a living, and that sure sounds like a bearing race spinning in the housing. I had a funny sound when I pushed the clutch in and let it out while not moving. Turned out to be trashed needle bearings in the t-case.

That's what I think it sounds like too. Hard to tell, but seems to be at the tranny. The only other thing would be the brass pilot bushing spinning in the flywheel. With the truck stopped and clutch in the tranny input Shaft would spin for a little bit, but nothing else is actually moving in the tranny is it? The output shaft would not be moving. But why does it get louder when you shift into gear with clutch in? Tranny synco bearings maybe?

I don't think the pilot busing is going to work loose enough to spin. The tranny components should be still when the clutch is in, I agree. BUT I swear there was activity in mine with the clutch in and the truck stationary. Mice, maybe.

Your throwout bearing should be silent until you step on the clutch, because it shouldn't be turning. There is a bearing that can make noise in the trans when the truck is in neutral, it'll get quiet when you depress the clutch.

I guess we will see when I pull the transmission in a few months. I always assumed my clutch was misaligned/maladjusted and the throwout bearing was riding something even while the clutch was in neutral as opposed to disengaging as it should. I do agree, that this doesn't sound like what miller is dealing with.

Agree with bikersmurf. For me, sometimes a good disassembly - cleaning - inspection - reassembly puts things right. Heavy on the SOMETIMES. Not always fun to do, but satisfying in the end.

Were you ever able to get around to dropping the transmission and see what that actual problem was? I am having a similar noise but mostly when I am in 3rd gear. Mine seems to get louder when I engage the clutch but I cant figure it out.
