Hey all,

I suspect my clutch master cylinder has gone bad. It puked yesterday leaving me stranded and ultimately getting the ride of shame in a AAA tow vehicle.

I researched the forum threads while I waited for the tow and feel pretty confident that replacing the clutch master cylinder and slave unit is the way to go (at least for the 1st line of troubleshooting).

The threads point out the SOR, JTO and CCOT kits for the job. Does anyone have a preference in the kit I choose or should I just get the CMC and CMS units and use the existing hard lines?

I'd like to get them ordered today so any feedback is appreciated.

Chris

I would just get one locally and get it in. They are all pretty much the same and cheap too.

Just bought a new clutch master from NAPA (no auto parts available) $46.00 with autoclub discount.
Ultra-8 performance part #P9856

Toyota also sells a rebuild kit. I would rebuild both at the same time, because I did one and within a week the other one failed, but it seems like you know that.

Ok, so my OCD completely kicked in as I searched and searched for where to buy my parts. I finally found an old thread from Trollhole that helped me make my decision:

The Great Cruiser Parts Link Thread

Go to the first link. You will need to buy at least $69 dollars worth of stuff to get free shipping.

I went with an Aisin Master Cylinder, Aisin Slave Cylinder, Bosche Oil Filter and an Air Filter for under $80 shipped free. Now I just need to purchase a stainless steel line to complete the project.

??? AAA ???

Start it in gear and learn to match engine and tranny speed to shift.

It's not a lot of fun, especially in traffic, but it will get you home....

Done it couple of times in 20 years... :D

Be glad you've got a 76. On that site, it's $85 for my clutch master, and the slave isn't available for my month in 74.

So much to learn.... Six months ago I didn't know which end of a wrench to use so I am making progress.

Well, then, I'll tell ya another common quick fix not often employed:

If you get stuck in an intersection, need to load it on a trailer or whatnot where you have to move cause the engine stopped/ran outta gas/whatever, you can crank on the starter with it in gear to move it. Just don't do it long as the starter will overheat.

OEM Rebuild kit from Toyota. Buy a hone kit and do it yourself. All others are not dependable. Master is 04311-60032. You should rebuild the slave at the same time. Slave is 04313-60020

Lessons learned:

1. ALL-FOREIGN CAR PARTS - They have the lowest priced Aisin Master Slave & Slave Cylinder and FREE shipping.
2. Standard 3/16th 60" stainless brake line is a good option to replace the clutch hard line if you strip the bolts when removing the Master Cylinder.
3. Standard 4" brake extension line works in place of higher priced options when connecting the clutch hard line to the Salve Cylinder.
4. Buy a bag of rags to clean up the mess.
