Clinometer Options for 80

I've been searching now for a few days for a clinometer for my 80 without any real progress. The Search didn't help too much either.
I was wondering what you guys either had for yourselves or what ideas you might have to retrofit one. I found these online made by Smittybilt, but naturally they have J***s for the display.:doh: Also, any ideas on how to make sure I mount it in a level spot?

This is on my list too. Try searching for CruiserDan's, his is the JDM option that is mounted by the rear view mirror. IIRC it was a PITA, the clinometer portion was separate in the roof somewhere. Very clean but a bit pricey and difficult install.

Can tell you they came factory in the SR5 package in the 80s in 4runner's (~ 84-87, not all 1st gen's), and the SR5 Toyota Tercel 4WD wagon, (not sure years and not all wagons were 4WD). Best location for these would be where they were on both of these vehicles... the top center of the dash.

Back in the day, in my 4runner I always thought for a factory Toy part it didn't look much like a 4runner. Then when I found out they were available in Tercels it made sense; it's almost the perfect mesh between both...

The unit which was/were meant for the had two of the three combos:

altimeter, sub tank gauge, or compass

The altimeter works on its own w/o needing any aux. sensors or anything, but the compass requires a sensor (and wiring) to be installed aft the sun roof, as well as the sub tank requiring the actual sub tank and associated parts to be functioning properly.

And as it is mentioned above by 84runner it is a MAJOR PITA to get then installed and working properly, not to mention that any of the gauge combos (w/o the brown/gray housing) would set one back $300 or more.

The Tercel unit seems that it would work much better/easier/simpler, IF you can still obtain one.

Peterson's 4Wheel Mag a month or two ago had a new product spotlight on a digital one that had an alarm that would sound. That way you can get distracted right before you roll over! When I get home I will see if the mag is still in the bathroom and I will give you the info.

Yeah no kidding, but what a sweet addition to the dash! Thanks for the info too.
I saw Cruiserdans, but as I read and you mentioned, it was a PITA. Still looks sweet though. And yes, the the older ones too, Just a little a little too much for something so old.
I will definitetly look into the digital one. I'll post some picks when its mine!

P.S.- A little history behind my need to get one. I almost rolled my baby on an off canter turn on one of the trails off Old Stage Road near my house. Scared the bajeesus out of my buddy. So I think the investment will pay off.
 
Maybe the first question should have been WHY?
I had an inclinometer for ten years. It looked great on the dash, but I never looked at it except for when the truck was stopped and I didn't want water to run across the floor!
When I was close to fatal tilt, I was always way too busy to read the thing, and it was bouncing around anyway. My instincts told me to watch out long before I had time to analize a tilting guage. The device is really not accurate unless the truck is stationary, and if you aren't moving, you either already rolled or you're not rolling! I don't need a guage to tell me that!
It did look really cool on the dash, and the passenger was impressed. But I would not give up money to have one again.
 
How many mirrors do you HAVE? Good lord.
 
I believe it'll be easy to park for you with all those mirror.

I don't know about the retro clinometer model, but I prefer the one that is attached on the LC Prado (90 series) it's a digital one, but looks good.

i was lucky to find the exact same unit out of a wrecked hiliux. it was only 70 bux, so i had to have it. i just have to paint it to match my grey interior (any takes on where to find a color match?) and wire it to the glove box light.
 
The first I ever saw, and the first Cruiser I had ever ridden in, was in a Prado while I was in Honduras. After crossing a river to avoid traffic over a bridge, I guess you could say it was love at first ride...with the cruiser not the instrument cluster.
 
LX_TREME you got enough going on in that cockpit!? Looks like you're ready to go into orbit with all that business!
