Chv V8/Holley Prjctn Problem - Runs Real Rough (1 Viewer)

All of above comments are just fine, however it has been my experience that those with Holley Projection never are thrilled. OEM injection systems normally have a full team of players (usually atleast 5 sensors). Projections don't have enough team players to feed enough information to the ECU, consequently rough running/poor drivability.

I think it's analog then. It's a kind of matt aluminum finish with black ends. I'm not sure how to change the signal to get the injectors switched, the connector that goes to the injectors doesn't reverse. I may have to just test the signal somehow.

The guy I bought it from said it was tuned to like 89 grade, and I put about 3 tanks of lower grade fuel in not knowing, hoping that didn't screw things up.

Can you confirm that both injectors should be sending fuel? Did you say you have the same system on yours?

Thanks guys, been huge helps!

Status?

I have a holley projection 2d and had a similar problem. It ended up being the connection between the pod wiring harness and the fuel injector and yes they should both spray all the time.

Yep, yours is analog. I have a Projection system on mine, used to have an analog ECU and replace it with a digi ECU when the old one crapped out.

I forgot, the 2D TBIs use at least 2 different styles of injectors. The wires going to the individual injectors should have a plug that you can detach and then swap sides between injectors. At least I can on mine and I would think yours too but I'm not certain. Swap wires and you would see if it is a bad injector.

Yes, same amount of fuel should come from both injectors. Running lower octane gas wouldn't screw up the injection. The motor might ping but the FI would work normally.

OK, I went to the garage and found an old part, are your injectors like this with the black domes over them?
The domes are the connection to the injector. Just undo the nut between them, lift the metal bracket, and swap the connectors side to side. Then you'll know if its the wiring or the injector itself.

You guys are awesome. Thanks for all the info.

So I swapped the caps and it turns out that one of the injectors isn't firing...problem solved!!! ....at least I hope that's it :)

I'm going to order a new set and install, expecting it to be solved.

Also, I tested compression with Alaska60 just to make sure it wasn't a valve stuck open or anything...compression was at 170 - Bam! Just had to gloat a little :) Thanks Alaska for the help, seriously appreciated and fun to learn from ya!

That is great you got it solved! Congrats....

thanks! now i'm just trying to find the part online...having a hard time. Looks like it might be out-dated. It's the 502-1, and not finding it easy to find replacement injectors.

Looks like the 502-1 isn't made anymore. The replacement parts are going to be ~$250...wondering if I just want to switch systems while I'm at it?? Someone mentioned OEM? Are there better injection systems that are a straight forward install??

I've had a Holley Projection 2D system for 5+ years now and it's been great. I would never go back to a carburetor.

A couple of times I had rough running at low rpm due to vacuum plugs leaking. Easy fix. Once I had rough running/dying and my plugs were fouled. Easy fix.

These systems are easy to tune once you read the manual...

As for the op's dead injector, check ebay. A lot of folks don't know how to tune these correctly and sell them pretty cheap.

Man, thats a tough one, deciding to throw-in-the-towel or not on your Pro-Jection. Now would be the right time to change it out before throwing any money at it, thats for sure.

I had to decide also when my analog controller died and I decided to replace it with a digital ECU. Mostly because it does work well, but it also does require some tinkering and replacement parts sometimes. I have my system figured out pretty well so I don't mind messing with it much. You'll have to decide too....

I would not be supprised if your ECU decides to conk out sometime. Its getting old and the adjuster knobs are not the best quality. When they get "crusty" the ECU will turn the injectors on full blast. I finally figured out why my engine would stall when I turned the mixture adjuster.... One time it actually hydrolocked the engine with fuel  So the analog ECU is a bad design, to say the least.

If I were in your shoes I'd probably think about slapping a carb on it or replacing your Pro-jection with another EFI system. I sure like the looks of this one and its adjsutable via laptop. Spendy though, of course....

I've read though that tapping on that dead injector when the motor is running might free it up. Its sounds stuck closed. Also, maybe one of the fuel injector service shops online could fix and balance your injectors? Not sure.

Lastly, you can have those injectors I showed in the pic but I assume at least one of them is bad. They were in a box of parts from the PO so I don't know their condition. One might be good, but also it may have a different flow rate than what you have on your 383. Shoot me a PM and we can compare part numbers.

I also have a line on a new system for you....cheap too.
let me know if your interested?

glad that replacement part worked for you...... let me know if you need anything else. always happy to help you out. You really need to show these guys a couple of pics of Clifford.....
Awesome 40 you guys! tons of custom mods and tastefully done too.

c'mon show a couple pics for the boys!

Right on. Good to hear it's fixed, congrats!
