I am about to drive over 1000 miles with my 9mo old in the back seat of or 60. I am looking for ideas on mounting the strap of the car seat. I don't just want to use the seat belt to hold her in. Has anyone done this themselves, and how did you do it. I am just looking for ideas on this. Thanks. Devan

I use the seat belt. What's wrong with that?

I guess you could install anchor points in the form of u-bolts or welded-in d-rings, but it seems unnecessary.

Pic of the car seat would be helpful.

Does it have the modern style shackles that clip into most modern day car child seat posts ?

I drive 80 miles a day with my 3yr and 6mo old in there car seats just held in with the seat belts no worrys

we did several thousand miles in our FJ62 with a Britax Roundabout seat (and a 18 month old) in the backseat--it was attached only with stock seatbelts. That being said, I do use the "LATCH" system/tether mechanism in my wife's bimmer wagon and it's good, solid. BUT--the seatbelt, combined with the soft seats (meaning you can push the seat deep down to get it tight) works a-ok. Never any worries from us, and we are "those" parents :-)

Problem is that these trucks aren't "modern" in that sense and lack the anchor points you're talking about. He's asking about installing some to use instead of using the seatbelt to secure the seat.

There's two ways to do it: drill holes and use ubolts or weld in some d-rings.

I put a 6 month old in my dodge using only the rear center seat belt. I made sure i got it as tight as possible cause i was a little worried at first but it doesnt move at all and i dont even think about it now.

I would do the same in the 60 if i ever moved the adapter over, or the 42 if he ever went there as well.

my buddy has the same car seat adapter type thingy and puts his 7 or 8 month old in the back of his 62 with no issues... and his wife seems kinda like "that kind" of mom.

I dunno i rode around in the back of a dodge shadow (POS) in a booster seat and in an 85 trans am (i had the cool mommy!) in a car seat. and im fine... the t/a was even totaled with me in it when we were rear ended by some woman doin nearly 80 while we were doin like 10. I still remember the carnage, rear fenders were pushed past the center line of the wheels.

Not sure about the 60s, but in my 62, it's always had one or two child seats in it. When rear facing, it was the seat belt only...shoulder in the 62, which was fine as the seat backed up to the front seat and was always snug.

Now that it's turned around, I use the shoulder belt in conjunction with the center belt attached to one of the d -rings on the floor of the cargo area. It's just as snug, if not more than any latch system I've used as well.

When I was a kid I didn't have a car seat. We had giant Chrysler station wagon and I STOOD, not sat, on the front bench seat, leaning against the back. There were no seatbelts. The first thing my dad did when we got the car was remove them.

I do the same as "mwood5" use the seat belt/lapbelt to secure car seat then use the strap behind the top back of the car seat and secure it to the cargo "tie-down" latch mounted in the floor of the rear cargo area. The seat is very secure when everything is tightened down.

i use the seat belt along with the anchor that latches the seat bottom to the truck. i raise the seat bottom throw the tether over the back of the seat and attach it to the anchor. close the seat bottom and use the seat belt. it fits tighter and moves less than the car seat in my wife's 09 VW. as stated before you can really compress the seats in these old rigs and get a secure fit. i'm as confident in the security of the seat in my '84 fj60 as i was in my wife's toureg.

In our area, you can take your rig and car seat in to the fire station and they will inspect / help install it properly. They will also tell you if it is not possible to attach it securely. This is a free service. You just need to find out what days they offer this service. I recommend that everyone take advantage of this service (if available in your area) since I hear from the fire fighters that most people's setups need some adjustment and many are just plain unsafe.

When I was a kid, my mom drove a 65 mustang. I stood in the front seat. If you remember, the seats didn't even lock in the upright position....every hard brake and the seat would fold up on me.....haha.....

You guys lived the good life, i was never allowed inside. I had to ride in the bed of the old GMC and if i wanted to see where we were going i had to stand on the bed sides to look over the cab. I think the seat belts in the back of the 60 will be quite adequate, i tote my 6 mo old around in mine. his seat is mounted with the center belt

The locking mechanism in the LC seatbelts combined with a tether attachment to a cargo tie down in the back will be more than enough to safely secure your little one. I have two young girls that I cart around in my 62 (it doesn's have stock shoulder harnesses in the rear so it is closer to a 60 in this regard) and the attachment setup is as secure as "latch".

The modern "Latch" system is not as much about security as it is about simplicity in that it reduces the options for mistakes in securing carseats in cars. Many injuries related to carseats come from improper anchoring.

If you read the manual, mount a tether/cargo hook in the cargo area, and snug the seatbelts nice and tight you will be as secure as you would with any other setup. Again, follow the installation instructions with a seatblet closely, paying special attention to where the seatbelt should run through the carseat to ensure proper mounting.

The car seat is supposed to be installed only by either the seat belt or mounting locks (modern cars) otherwise the car seat will not act properly (car seat plastic fail by different stress on it from extra mounting points) in a accident.

Just make sure you get that seatbelt nice and tight. Run it by your local fire department as they always have car seat techs that can help you out. I also have a 2 year old and a 3 month old and all i use is the seatbelt and feel perfectly safe

You could buy one new replacement belt for the baby car seat. The belts in my 60 were all dry rotted. Even worse, my drivers seat metal latch fell apart in my hand when I clicked the seat belt into it. After that happened, I realized they were all old and unsafe.
