I have a 71 fj40 with an old school auto turbo 400 inside it and it has a crappy old 71 72 chevy 350. Im going for the TBI setup now and have a chance to buy a 95 tbi 350 but was wondering if there is a cutoff after like 91 or something for adapting to it. I was wondering since mine is already setup with the bell housing on the 72 motor i can just swap over the housing and stuff for the 95? or do i need to buy a whole new setup since its a newer motor to connect to the tranny???? Please help i got an offer to buy it sunday as my bday present for myself:)

Howdy! Take a look at some of the vendors like Advanced Adapters on line and see what parts fit with what other parts, and which parts require adapters. You might find that it would be nice to swap out the old 3 speed auto for a newer 4 speed with overdrive. John

The block is the same but the serpentine pullies are not... Repeat are not the same. The location of the pass. side pullies will not allow you to place dual batteries in normal locations. It pushes the battery too far out. My TBI from a '92 would not allow me but '89 would work.

Here is a little something to remember, the flexplate is to be for a one peice rear main seal. so you will need to go the Gm performance catalog or TCI for the flexplate that will work. when you do the belt drive, make sure that you use the reverse rotation waterpump. I did a TBI in mine and you will love the reliablity

The early TBI belt drive was stamped steel and were prown to breakage on the drivers side low. the later years are two peice cast aluminum. Gm makes a a/c compressor idler pulley that goes in place of the compressor.

I think it would be a direct swap...could you not use the stock GM flexplate for the TBI engine with the 400 trans?

Something else to keep in mind - if your new 350 motor was originally bolted up to 4L60E and you retain the 400, you are going to have issues with the ECM, it will be trying to communicate with a transmission that isn't there. The easiest way to do this swap is to get the engine, trans and electronics from the same donor vehicle. Late model ECM's are nice since they can be tweeked to operate in the parameters you want. I have a TBI 350 and 4L60 in my FJ40 and love it. (I drove trucks for years and don't have anything to prove by shiftin' gears).
