Over the weekend my check engine light on my ‘93 came on cruising down the highway. The idle is a little rough, but otherwise the truck runs great. I pulled codes, and it looks like I'm getting a code 71, which is the EGR sensor.

I also noticed a vacuum port on the EGR solenoid is running to atmosphere. Could this be the issue? Does anyone know where this line is supposed to run?

Also, I'm interested in deleting the EGR and PAIR system anyway. Would this be a good time to do it? Will I constantly get a CEL if I delete EGR?

I deleted mine, shorted the 2 temp sensor wires together and have not had the CEL on in over 1 year. can't answer your initial question of the vacuum port, but the line has to be somewhere nearby
 
Put a vacuum line back in place, clear the code and see if it comes back. If it does then short the two temp sensor wires together and call it a day (no more codes, EGR still in place). I also recommend capping the EGR vacuum lines if its not being used.

Thanks! How do I clear codes? Also, any idea what size the vacuum lines are?
 
Pull the EFI fuse to clear the codes. Not sure on the exact size but the EGR modulator (brown round thing) comes off easily and you can take it into the parts store to find the right one.
 
Use the code reader app you pulled the code with, or Torque.

All the vacuum lines are Ø4-mm (ID). That's 0.157-in in old money (or 5/32").

BTW, it'd be helpful if you'd either a) mention the year model of your truck, or b) put it in your signature line. Not everyone is following you.

BTW, that's a fuel line size hose.
 
This isn't the cause of the fault code, unless it fell off while you were driving.

Does anyone sell block off plates for the EGR delete? I guess I need two? One for EGR inlet and one for EGR outlet?
 
I've seen key chains that pay homage to the EGR system.

I've never quite understood all of the cloak-and-dagger acrobatics involving EGR delete plates. Is it illegal to sell an EGR delete plate? Why are they labeled "Model 01 key chain" (*wink-wink, nudge-nudge*)?

Wouldn't it be easier to just call them EGR delete plates?

I did. The description for the Model 01 is fairly clear:

"This is the perfect gift for the person who wants to pay homage to the EGR inlet pipe on the 93-97 1FZ."

So I guess the Model 01 goes on the intake manifold. Does the Model 04 go on the back of the head?

Big Brother is always watching. It's the same reason people call guns, gubs on this site. That said, unless you live in an area that does emissions testing, just doing the EGR delete is sufficient. You can yank it all out and go the key chain route, but don't be surprised if the smog cops bust down your door in the middle of the night. ;)

To me, the greatest thing about disabling the EGR is that it stops having that hot and angry pipe melting up all of your main engine harness wires and it may help with the classic cylinder number 6 head gasket failure. Being able to put a bare hand on the EGR pipe while the motor is up to running temp is a thing of beauty.

You'll want to keep the charcoal canister but the EGR and PAIR can go.

That must have been a while ago then and the story has changed. I was here in 2004 and people were calling them gubs then. At any rate, deleting the EGR is great if you can get away with it.

I didn't remove any of it. I just disabled it. If someone wants to reconnect it in the future, they can.
