I finally got tired of all the play in my gas pedal assembly in my 65 lpb. Being the rig is 46 years old things get some wear in them. I went to the local Ace hardware and picked up a variety of bronze bushings, they call them bronze bearings.
I removed the plate piece and opened up the slot, with some creative drill work, dremel was at work, to accept the od of the bushing. the id of the bushing slipped right on the pedal rod.
Put it all back together and test drove, so far so good.
total cost of the bushing I used $2.80, plus about 1/2 hour of my labor.
almost forgot, bushing has a 3/8"od and 1/4" id and a flange.

Now that this has been in use for a couple of years how is the bushing holding up? I know that the original plate had an oval slot in it... has there been any downside to changing this to a round hole?

Mark, I'll get a look at it Friday. No issues that I recall, no binding or anything. I'll check the wear. I don't run it that often. 50 miles a month give or take.

As most of you know, my 64 lwb is my daily driver, so I have had to 'visit' this issue more than once in the last 20 years I've been driving it. I experimented with making the hole in the plate smaller and rounder, and found binding to be a significant issue.

I welded up the end of the pedal ( the part Paul put the bushing on) and welded up part of the plate, but ended up filing most of that back out again in order to keep the pedal from binding. It is actually trickier than it looks to get every piece of linkage in that system to move smoothly, but the trade off is that if you take the time to do it up front, it will be a LOT longer until you have to do it again.

Shane (aatlas1x) took an interest and actually made some repro plates a few years back. He sent me one to beta test, but unfortunately I lost it before I could install it. D'oh.

One of the things I discovered, but don't remember the exact specs on, is that in order to optimize the 'throw' of that pivot, I actually had to change the angle of the oval somewhat from the orientation set at the factory. Maybe I'll remember to snap a pic the next time I have to work on it. LOL.

Well I welded up the groove that had been worn in the "pin" part and welded up the matching part of the oval hole that had worn. I then used a Dremel to smooth out the pin back to what I presume is correct - just a straight pin - and to shape the oval back to an oval (based on a pic of Shane's replacement part).

It is hard to tell with it off the truck but I think I'm most of the way there. Maybe will need to fine tune with some Dremel work once I get it installed...
