Chasing a vibration and want your thoughts on if this could be CV shaft related. Starting at 55mph I start to hear a harmonic drone/vibration. I can feel it in my feet and hear it in driver's seat. I cannot feel or hear while sitting on pass seat while my wife drives. When letting off throttle the noise will cease. The noise did STOP for a few days after turning left down into a parking lot where my traction control beeped for a second. Not sure if related or coincidence. I'm leaving towards the cv shaft because bearings were replaced 3k miles ago before I purchased. I have been chasing the vibration since purchase. 2007 gx. Any thoughts?

Have you checked the ujoints? Grease everything and see if it helps any. Just a thought

Ujoints make more sense to me. My front driveshaft was completely worn out in 100k miles. On mi third now

@Vlad : did you replace the shaft or just the u-joints? I have 177k and have the rhythmic hum that the OP mentions too.

It was faster to just swap the whole DS and keep the others as spares for me. A lot of driveline shops won't balance a Lexus DS and if you do Ujoints rebalancing is sort of recommended (as you can still have a hum after if you don't).

is there a recommended brand or one to avoid?

I only use OEM myself.

After running the numbers, this seems like the way to go for both front and back.

Toyota OEM or CruiseOutfitters Ujoints are $55-$65 each. The new driveshafts are $260 and you can change them yourself in your driveway in an hour.

So unless your shop will replace 2 ujoints and balance for less than $150, you're actually better off just buying the whole thing. Plus you get the upgraded part number on the rear.

I may have done this a time (or two) :p

I'm fighting this same problem. I just had all tires balanced and I have a very bad drone/vibration at about 45 mph. Where is a good place to get replacement driveshafts?

My LX has 310k miles on it, I've had it for many years and never replaced driveshafts/CV joints

I put a 2" OEM lift on it about 12k miles ago and have not had vibration issues until now.

I must need a better place to order parts. My local dealer is charging 500.99 for the front shaft, and 524.99 for the rear drive shaft.

Had a thought... Will it hurt anything if I remove the front draftshaft and then drive with the center diff locked and see if the vibration goes away and then same with the rear drive shaft removed (after putting the front one back in, of course).

I'll have to drive with it in low range since I don't have a separate center diff switch.

what a bonehead. I thought I was in the 80series section, sorry about that.

How did you determine your front DS was completely worn out?

I'm realizing the time I'm putting towards re-balancing tires, chasing my own "vibrations", might be pointing in the wrong direction.

I took it off and the ujoints were floppy like a cooked noodle :p

So while greasing the driveshaft I noticed that my front drive shaft had a weight on it. Obviously to balance the driveshaft. But maybe my vibration stems from this weight?

I think it would vibrate if you lost a weight. Is there any sign of one missing?

No there isn't. I keep saying vibration but that the wrong word. It's a harmonic drone type noise I can hear and feel in my foot while driving.

ujoints.
