is there a mileage that this should be done at as PM? my alt looks original @ 110k so fortunately it has not been replaced with some rebuild parts store junk

I would guesstimate every 140K as a rule for PM.

I was only at 135k. I would reccomend 120k just to be safe and so you don't have to experience what I did.

Its on the list for the next order, I'll have it on hand for when it fails or if I get a chance to replace them, I plan on dual batteries soon, might do it then

The frequency at which you'll need to replace the brushes depends on the load on the system. How often do you start the truck, do you drive with the lights on, how big a stereo, how old a battery are you running. All these and more come into play on how fast those brushes will wear. I replaced mine at 130k. They were only half way worn out. I don't drive with my lights on except after dark. I don't usually drive short trips so less starts. I do replace my battery every 3 years reguardless of it's performance, so less charging of an old tired battery.

The manual specs that the minimum brush length is 1.5 mm. You can easilly remove them and measure them to get an idea of how long you have till they need replacing. Personally if I'm going to take the time to check them, I'm going to replace them.

How much are the brushes?

Thanks. That makes letting Toyota replace the entire alternator at my cost a lot more painful!

Ouch!

not sure but they're in the $30 range I think.

A "smart shopper" could have them for ~$16.

$16 included shipping.

Rogue,
If you need more space or tools to work on the 80, I'm at the mouth of Provo Canyon. Drop me an email.

Personally I'd pull the Alt. It's pretty tight down there and you need to remove the rear cover. Also brush dust can pack into the armature and bump the brushes away so a good blow job should be done as well, especially if the brushes are worn down near their limit.

I can't believe you guys let this one slip by :D
