I just put in a brand new remanufactured toyota alternater in my 60 a few weeks back and now I am having the "charge battery" light flash when I start up the cruiser and let it idle. It flashes about 2 times per second and its a steady pace. When I get RPMs up, it doesn't flash. This problem just came up about a week ago and I haven't changed anything since I put the new alternator in.

The odd part is when I'm sitting at a stop light idling with the brake depressed, it won't flash. The second I let off the brake it goes back to flashing and I can hear a "tick" noise coming from what sounds like the passenger dash board. Then I put it in gear and give it gas and it goes away. How can applying the brakes, while the car is in neutral, make this flashing light stop? It doesn't make sense...

I'm confused:confused:

Most autoparts store will test the alt and batt for free.
Maybe start there to see what you can rule out
Make sure the belt isnt slipping

When my 60 alt was going there was a steady light nothing flashing, loose connection or short maybe

I would test the alternator. Just becauase it's a new remanufactured doesn't mean it's good.

x2 on what Randy said I had a remanned one from Oreillys that was dead right out of the box

test your alt - new/reman or not. have a spare alt? look for a ND alt in parts section if you want one - great prices typically around 50$ for a used one. good peace of mind vs. 130'ish when i checked for a new/reman ND.

Yes, as ROM said, check belt and check for a loose ground. Mine was the one that goes from the head to firewall that made my charge light flicker at idle.

3 in a row from oriellys. I wouldnt leave a parts store with a remanufactured one with out having it tested first.

i would bet it is either a loose ground wire, or you may have issues with the remanufactured voltage regulator not charging right. i am 9/10ths sure that the volt reg is in the alt on these. buy NEW OEM, from NAPA, Checker, or AutoZone!

get a voltmeter and see what the battery is charging at when the light is flickering. i would bet 10-11.8 volts, but not 13.8 volts like it should be.

the reason this does not happen when the brakes are depressed at idle is because likely you have power brakes which are drawing power, causing the voltage regulator to charge at the correct 12.8-13.8 volts.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but did you ever find what the culprit on this was? MY 62 just had an alternator die, and when i replaced it i am all of a sudden having the exact same issue... i've taken it to get tested and they say it's okay, but i would beleive my truck over that that jerry rigged machine says anyday..
