Changing hubs from Aisin to AVM and vise versa in a factory part-time 80

HRTROB, sorry for getting off topic, but you may want to add some moly grease to those knuckles. The one in the posted pic sure looks dry.

Thank you inkpot for the suggestion. I'll look into greasing those knuckles :)

Took off the AVM hub cover and this is what's inside. I don't see any spacer. Do I have the shorter birfs?

Probably.... But there is one third option for your truck if you have a TPO winch.

You will, as I stated 20 posts ago, need to pull your birfield and meausure.

I know it's hard.

Were AVMs set up to accept all three birf options? How different was the third birf length?

It'd be way easier to pull the AVMs and try installing the Aisins to see if the groove ends up in the correct spot.

I don't see a spacer.

Pulling one of the AVMs would be my next step.

I don't have the Aisin hubs yet. Anyone know the cheapest place online to buy the correct Aisin hubs that were on the part-time 80s? I know Slee has them for $290/pair

This specific situation will actually matter whether the OP has ABS on his truck or not as it will determine whether he needs another snap ring groove or not. The earlier 238.5mm birfs are also applicable to his rig depending on market so we would need to know if he has ABS or not.

If he has the earlier birfs then it will be a direct fit and he can use the Aisin/Toyota 43530-60042 manual hub assys.

If he has ABS then he will need to add the snap ring groove.

So on an HDJ81, it's as simple as:

No ABS = shorter birfs = manual hubs are direct fit?

Then you would need to pull the birfields and see if there is an ABS exciter rig pressed onto the birfield. Or measure the birfield:

236.5mm length: Aisin hubs direct fit.

248.5mm length: Aisin hubs not a direct fit and will need a second snap ring groove cut.

I removed the knuckle to replaced two sheared knuckle studs. So I finally got to measure the birfs. Looks like they are the shorter ones

I have a 1996 HDJ80 with no ABS. Doing a knuckle rebuild and thinking about tossing on a part time kit at the same time. Would you expect it to have the shorter birf?
Thanks! Nothing like resurrecting an 8 year old thread.

According to the info posted here, it should have the shorter birfs unless you have a PTO winch? I forgot about this thread but I did end up bolting on Aisin hubs on my factory part time ‘96 HDJ80 with no ABS

I got the hubs from Cruiserparts.net. I wish I got them from somebody else because they sent me a mismatched pair. Didn’t even offer to replace or do anything to rectify the problem.

Awesome thanks for letting me know. That sucks about the mismatched parts. I got lucky and picked them up on the classifieds.

Going to install them when I do a knuckle rebuild soon.
