Hey guys, I've had my part-time 4WD '96 HDJ80 for 4 years now and only realized recently that it has AVM front hubs instead of the gold Aisins. I want to swap it out to the Aisin ones just to keep everything original. What parts would I need to do the swap (aside from the obvious Aisin hubs)? What could be the reason for the previous owner to switch to AVM? Did he have to replace anything else (birfs) when he did the swap? The truck was bone stock when I bought it, and just one owner.

Aisin hubs will require an additional snap ring groove on the axle AVM hubs avoid the needs by using a spacer. You do not have room to use a spacer with Aisin hubs. Having owned both hubs given a choice I would not run AVM hubs on anything.

This specific situation will actually matter whether the OP has ABS on his truck or not as it will determine whether he needs another snap ring groove or not. The earlier 238.5mm birfs are also applicable to his rig depending on market so we would need to know if he has ABS or not.

If he has the earlier birfs then it will be a direct fit and he can use the Aisin/Toyota 43530-60042 manual hub assys.

If he has ABS then he will need to add the snap ring groove.

OP vehicle is 96 HDJ80

Thanks for the info guys. Pardon my next question..... How do I know if I have ABS or not? I'm not sure if the trucks sold in my country came with it or not. What should I look for? I think I have a fuse in the ABS slot in the fuse box under the hood, but no ABS light in the cluster when I turn the key (even if I put a bulb in there). Not sure if it came with ABS and the previous owner took it out.

Then you would need to pull the birfields and see if there is an ABS exciter rig pressed onto the birfield. Or measure the birfield:

236.5mm length: Aisin hubs direct fit.

248.5mm length: Aisin hubs not a direct fit and will need a second snap ring groove cut.

I have a 94 FZJ80 and I am going to be installing the AISIN Slee part time kit. Would I need to upgrade my factory birfs with new chrome molly ones or can I use the OEM? I should probably just call Slee but I thought I would ask here.

Would I be able to determine what birfs I have by pulling the AVM hubs and looking if it has the spacer? Would the AVM hubs fit on the shorter birfs without the spacer?

True but one of his first posts says he doesn't have an ABS light even after he put a bulb in the cluster.:D

Your reading comprehension and my lack of answered his question. Have you ever tried to turn off an ABS light without pulling the bulb.:bang:

Should have ABSsensor plug in top of knuckle housing?

This. Should be the only electrical plug on the front knuckles.

Also under the hood you'll have the ABS module near the master cylinder.. or at least it is close to the MC on LHD vehicles. Definitely somewhere under the hood, probably very visible. It is a chunk of aluminum and steel with about 5 brake lines running into it.

Here's what's under the hood

Here's a photo of another local market HDJ80 that I checked out recently. Doesn't seem to have an ABS module but also has the ABS fuse in the fuse box?

Thanks mikaelrules!

So back to the original question, since my truck doesn't have ABS, did the previous owner have to replace anything else when he switched to AVM hubs? Or can I just buy the Aisin hubs and swap them

It should be easy to pull the cover of the AVM hub.. the main body can stay in place, but with the cover removed you should be able to see the splined end of the birfield with a snapring about 5mm from the end. If there is a cylindrical spacer between this snapring and the hub gear that has outer teeth to actually engage on something in the hub body, you have the longer birfs, and will either need to change them or add a groove for the Aisin hubs. No spacer: shorter birf, your Aisins will bolt right up.

Try and find directions on the AVM Hubs.. I know with Aisin the dial needs to be in a specific position to keep everything together when removing the cover.

I have the longer birfs with Aisin hubs and had a machine shop add a groove. They (or I) got the measurements wrong so the groove was about 1mm too far in, so I just enlarged it with an angle grinder and a cutting disk. Many on this forum just make the groove with the cutting disk. Protip: unbolt the xfer case end of the rear driveshaft and carefully put the truck in low gear so that the front driveline/birfield is spinning and it makes adding the groove straight very easy.
