What is the condition of your battery/state of charge?

Some electronic ignition systems will not work properly if the battery does not have a full charge.

If you crack the fuel line at the carburetor and crank the engine, does gas leak out?

Are you sure that you are cranking long enough to get the pump to push fuel to the carb?

Red Top battery is less than 1yr old. Did die, but I have it on a charge.

Wagon started/ran before the HG issue with low battery power.

Gas barely leaks out of the fuel line when cranking over. I have had plenty of trouble with my gas tank having crap in it, which is a completely different thread. However, I am able to bypass the tank with a plastic red gas can, if you feel that pure gas will make a huge improvement over starter fluid.

Pretty sure that I am cranking long enough. At least 20-30 seconds of crank time.

Thanks,

Dave

Just making sure that you are getting fuel...

See if it starts up after pouring a little gas right down the carb...

It might take a little bit of screwing around like this to get the fuel pump to prime and get fuel to the carb...

Oh, and how long has the fuel in the tank been sitting?

?

Mine took way longer than I thought it would. I probably cranked for a total of 2+ minutes with a little ether spray every so often.

Here is what I have now.

Almost 100% positive that I am timed properly. When I turn the engine over with the #1 spark plug pulled out, I can turn it over until it sparks. At that point I look at the mark on the flywheel and it is at/near the TDC mark.

I have also gotten fresh gas in the red plastic can and now running new gas to the carb.

New problem...Too cold outside for the engine to crank over with any amount of speed.

Please keep the suggestions comming if you think of any.

Red Tops once run down sometimes won't hold a charge.

Yeah, sounds like that could be part of the problem. I am constantly charging the battery after I turn it over for a little bit.

However it is about 17deg right now. All the pipes in my house are frozen, so I am really hoping it warms up soon.

Thanks for the responce.

Dave, I don't mean to be remedial here, but did you make sure #1 was on the compression stroke when you installed the diz? The timing mark and TDC will appear twice in one complete cycle of the 4 cycle engine. If you are not on the compression stroke, you will not get it to fire.
Apologies if you've already made sure of this.
Easiest way is to stick your finger in the #1 sparkplug hole and crank the engine, you'll know when you are on compression.;)

Nevertheless, that truck should be turning over. My daughter's red top turned over and started her mini's engine at -16 degrees this morning. My Napa Exide turned over my FJ45 with fresh 20w50 oil at -16F this morning as well, and with the 32 year-old (non-gear reduction) starter fired it right up.

You and your low temperatures:flipoff2:

Nothing is too remedial at this point. I'll check in the morning. I won't be lieing if I said I checked by looking in there, but I didn't see a piston. I just passed it off as being blind. Yes, we actually do not have a metal coat hanger in the house. Don't know why, but that is how things go.

By the way, I got my pipes to thaw and now have water.

thanks again guys for all your help. I'll get back to here in a couple days with some more answers. Looks like next week we will get some warmer weather.

My head gasket blew on sunday, never done a change before. Do I have to mess with my timing chain? sorry if this is a stupid question. Not sure if the cold morning start finaly did me in it was only about 9 degrees out. I think it was on its way out anyway, kept findin moisture in the oil. My fan belt was a little lose could have been slipping causing the water pump to work improperly, then over heating the engine. This realy sucks I've never had a garage to work in and because my honda car s*** the bed, my cruiser is my daily driver. I have a bullet bike but it horrible riding when it is far below freezing, and also is a bitch to get started. Wonderful thread lots of good info. thank you

I want to say that you have timing gears in your 2F. Which means that you won't have to work on your timing chain. Do a search on checking the gears, but never heard about them going too bad. Not 100% positive but pretty close.

Mine had that baby poop oil look in certain places. I think what pushed my HG into oblivion was the fact that my radiator fluid was older than father time and it got clogged in the thermostat.

Good luck, remember that I still don't have my rig working yet. So you might want to follow someone elses leed until I am able to report back with positive news.

Up and running.

Couple more questions:

1. I can see oil dripping out of my rocker thingy, and in other places it is draining out. Is this normal. Pic below.

2. Why is my distributor pinned up against the lifter cover? Is there a way to fix this? It wasn't like this before. Pic below also.

Do ALL of your rocker arms have oil flowing out of the hole on the top of them?

The distributor was probably removed at one time, and put back in a couple teeth off...no biggie unless you are out of adjustment for setting your timing...

Yes, all the rockers have oil coming out of them. Some dripping and some are flowing.

How do I get my distributor back to the normal position? Looked in the FSM and searched. Is it something that I have to just continue to fiddle around with?

Thanks again for everyones help.

Dave

Ok,

I don't know or even what to know, but I now have the distributor in the correct position and it runs.

Before I go out for the maiden voyage I need to change the oil, install the thermostat (when it gets here from CDAN) and add more radiator fluid.

Again and Again.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP STEVE as well as everyone else. x1,000,000

check your timing. if it is running fine, you probably dont need to mess with the distributor.

if you need to reset the distributor, you have some bolts/screws at the bottom of the distributor that go into the housing. you will have to remove those and the FSM should tell you what you need to know from there. if you dont have a factory service manual, FSM, you should do yourself a favor and get one. they are very helpful once you get past the odd translations in the older manuals.

coil bind possible??
