Took the dash apart to clean up some wiring and get my 12v/lighter working this week, and unearthed what appears to be the CDL harness, tucked behind my audio head unit.

Why the jumper wire in there? Was that like that new or did PO do that?

What purpose does that serve?

Sorry for the redundancy of 1000 CDL posts, but I could only find details about jumpering the actual switch/sensor on the t-case.

Thanks in advance!

It is factory.

Vehicles in this market have a "shorting pin" to take the place of the switch.

So, if I wanted to manually control my center diff just yank this wire, plug in ye ole CDL switch, and go to town, yes?

Yup

Yes, the CDL switch would allow you to manually control the CDL in high range. If you also wanted to use low range WITHOUT the CDL engaged, you'd have to perform the pin 7 mod.

Adding the switch allows you to lock the center in high range. in order to run unlocked on low range you also need to do the "pin7" modification at the difflock ECU or unplug the low4 position indicator on the transfercase.

Well, when I switch from 4H to 4L, I do hear the click in the driver footwell, but my CDL and ABS lights do not illuminate - probably a glazed over sensor/switch in the center diff that george has the pretty nifty write-up for...but for now chasing down gremlins to get her to a true "Stage Zero."

One nice thing about adding the CDL switch and 7pin mod is you can engage/disenage the CDL easier than shifting a million times between high and low. Although the flip side is you have added complexity to the system and could be harder to track.

I just did mine last weekend and it looked exactly like yours. If you depress the tab that's where the foam rubber is split you can pull out the plug cover. I used the loop of wire as a handle, came right out. You then plug the remainder into the back of your new CDL switch and voila it will now lock in low and high. Used mine today in sand for the first time, drove out of soft sand using the 2nd gear start without hesitation.

A great mod in fact, this was how the 80 came when first in production but, IMO so many people pressed it accidently the switch was changed into the low range selection to prevent binding up in the drivetrain. For me it was about trying to reverse a very heavy trailer up an incline and with full lock on and in low range, the torture in the drivetrain could be felt and heard as the tyres squealed in protest.

This along with the temp gauge mod are IMO two of the best things you could do to your 80....period!

Or buy a 91-92 80 and it comes that way from the factory! ;)

'Nother quick question - when the truck is in ACC mode I have an assortment of dash lights, but I do not have the center diff light illuminated - bulb burned out? Or should I just wait to wonder/worry about this until I have pulled my switch/sensor out of the diff and done the cleaning off glazed contacts?

Thanks fellas.

Started being sold in Europe from 1990 :)

In 1990 I was 15 and didn't realize the 80 series was available in Europe (I lived in Iowa). I had to wait until I was 17 and had enough money saved up to buy my 80 new in 1992. :)

Has it ever lit up for example when you selected LOW?

This is a weird one on LC's, mine has the three diff locks option and when I switch on the ignition it goes through a bulb test, the two red ( front and rear) warning lights come on momentarily but not the CDL, I have checked this with other 80 owners and it seems the yellow CDL bulb is not in the check?

I went another route, I had the old Fords and then stepped into the quick BMW arena for awhile, then went classic (old Jaguars) and then I wanted more usability (family) I went estate car and then 4x4, never looked back.

When I get fed up spannering I will, slip into something more laid back in appearance, but still moves like a scorched cat Audi RS4/8.....hmmmm.

I've had plenty of fun cars (including an M5 and RS4). Never drove them. Always came back to my 80.
