91-92 has a dash button for center locked in HI. Not much.:meh: Some want to be able to use low range on a steep driveway or boat ramp, some say it's more fun to wheel with the center open till you need to lock it, etc...

I forgot how much you wheel your 80. :flipoff2:

I always thought something was broken on mine bc the CDL light went off when I put it in L range.

The CDL light should come on when you shift into low range if the truck hasn't been modified from factory.

According to CDan the wire for the transfer case also changes some shift points in the transmission which is why the Pin7 mod is better. With the Pin7 mod the transmission knows you are in 4Lo and changes the shift points but the CDL does not engage unless you have the CDL switch turned on. It might only apply to the 93+ units though.
Here is CDan's write-up on how to do the Pin7 mod: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showpost.php?p=16905&postcount=8
And description of the updated shift points: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showpost.php?p=16908&postcount=11

OK boys and girls, once again we're confusing the issue. Please pay attention to the thread.
The OP is asking about an FJ80, not an FZJ80. An FJ80 does NOT have an electronically controlled transmission. An FJ80 does NOT have ABS. Therefore the pin 7 modification buys you nothing on an FJ80.

OK I'm learning here too. So if I unplug mine I can still hit the button for lock correct?

You are correct sir. All that sensor does is lock the center in low range. With it disconnected you have manual control of the CDL in both low and high range.

Did the 7 pin MOD, tested on street and I can feel a jump when put on low than engage CDL, is it normal? Feels like more torque, and my brakes had a hard time to stop the vehicle? It sure feels different

I just saw this post. What you're feeling is the gear reduction of low range. Low speed/high torque. Has nothing to do with the pin 7 mod or locking the CDL, just a function of being in low range.

 ...

How many times must we beat this dead horse?

Bingo.

How so

If all the 7 pin mod does is prevent the CDL from locking automatically when shifting into Low Range so you have full control over it with use of the button, then that buys a lot in my book :)

Being able to make tight turns in Low Range (CDL off) without binding up the drive train is well worth it IMHO

It actually makes a huge difference when you're trying to park 10,000 lbs worth of power boat in a tiny space behind the shop

He's just saying it's easier to unplug the switch on the t-case.

I knew about both methods, but chose to do the Pin 7 mod. Much cleaner than having a connector dangling around or zip tying it to something.

Nope he's saying no need for the 7 pin mod on an fj80. Different from a fzj80

We really need to address the lack of reading comprehension in this forum.
Please read post #3 and #8 and open your eyes this time.

No, he's saying that the pin 7 mod and unplugging the connector in the t-case do the exact same thing on an FJ80, it's just easier to unplug the switch than it is to do the pin 7 mod.

Good info thanks.
I've been meaning to disable the CDL in low but haven't gotten around to it.
So much easier to unplug the sensor on the t-case.
First order of business was to go try a hill I normally avoid.
Scoots right up it now. 30 MPH @ 3000 RPM instead of 5 MPH @ 5000 RPM.
