1st: Yes I searched...

2nd: I still have a question....

My question is about caster angle. I know how to adjust it with shims so it is not a measurement or installation question. it is more of a practial application question.

I have a 1981 BJ44 (same as the fj40 front end) with some wander. I installed Alcan 4" front springs and 4.5" rears. The truck essentially runs level. After install of the springs and a 2.5 degree shim (thick end forward), a little driving and light off road to break in the springs a little, I took it in for an alignment.

The results said I have -3 degree caster on both sides (at least my axle is straight!). So now I need to get new shims to make up the difference.

So here (finally) is my question... I was thinking that putting in an 8 degree shim would correct my isssue and bring me to around +2.5 degree caster (3+2.5 = -5.5 degree caster with no shim. Put in an 8 degree shim and +2.5!) Stock is +1 but I have read here that some recommend +2 and other people go higher than that!

I don't use the rig for much heavy wheeling, more on-road, fire road and expedition type wheeling. With this in mind, should I stick with +2.5 degree (which will end up around +1.5 to +2 degree with the slight lowering of the front end with the thickness of the shim) as a target from end caster?

What are you guys running?

Oh, and my setup will be 35x12.50x15s on 15x8 wheels. I have 33x10.5 right now. I don't know if it matters, but I have a h41 and 4.11 diffs with an h55 going in very soon.

Thanks all!

Whatever the +- is, it is 1 Degree pointing up...

As I stated in the first post, I know what shims are, and I know what stock angle is (even if it is called - or + one). I know people on here have arbitrarily put in shims, but since I am going to be ordering custom shims and can do any angle....

My question still stands.

What caster degree have people set ther front ends to and why? Is one caster better for highway as opposed to offroad? Should I target 1* to 2* up, or should I go higher?

Thanks all for your gracious help.

i think mine is set around 4-5 degrees been awhile ,can't remember off hand
i did do a cut-n-turn of the front axle housing when i did the SOA so i had the option to add a few more degrees
heres a pic from a manual you decide if it says positive or negative
