I'm curious, did the rad still have water in it after you had the 450* reading?
 
If I was going to add a water temp gauge I think I would spend more to get a better unit - buy once, cry once sort of thing.
 
Imho

I am not loving the shroud you have … it is pretty but it’s not allowing the fan to draw the air through all the radiator

The gaps around it are limiting the air that’s being drawn in as well

I would just try and seal all the gaps around and see if that changes anything… it would most likely marginally … worth trying that out first imo
 
At 450 degrees water temp,, the radiator pressure would have to be about 500 psig to avoid boiling over.

What's the CFM of the fan? a Ford Taurus fan arrangement (alluded to for F engines) draws over 40 amps. You either have an oversized alternator, or a low flow fan?
