The 16 MPG was getting to the wallet, and Dad had T5 overdrive manual transmission sitting at his house, so I'm going to replace the powerglide with the manual. This motor has a lot of oil leaks (probably original gaskets), so I'm going to use this opportunity to replace gaskets, upgrade the 1bbl carb, and the exhaust. Found a company that makes nice cast headers for the inline. Going to get a set of these and we'll see how they look on a Toyota head as well. Probably go back stock otherwise, since I want the least amount of downtime.
Got this project started over the Thanksgiving weekend. Started with a compression test to see if I had any concerns. Cold numbers showed all cylinders above 120psi, except #5 at 95psi. Warmed the car up and tested again. All cylinders pulled over 140psi. Guess I should be OK in the bottom end, assuming that all of the individual cylinders look good.
Spark plugs looked OK, #2 was a little dark, will keep my eyes on it if everything looks OK.
Starting pic
Pulled the motor and trans together. Not too hard at all, just took my time and pushed the car back out from under the combo. No load leveler. Didn't get any pics in progress, I was kinda focused on not dropping the motor on the car.
Motor on floor.
It's a dirty beast.
I did have a little help:
Separated the trans from the motor yesterday and got the motor on the stand. Looking to pull the head this week and see how the valves, cam, cylinder wall look. Going to try to retain focus on the trans swap.
