Hello to all the 'mud members--
I have been a lurker for quite some time and only recently signed up to this site. The vehicle with the carb in question is a 1972 FJ40 with original F motor, 115K on the odometer. I've put only a few miles on since purchased from the PO. Most all else appearing to be bone stock, there is an interesting carburetor setup. Some sort of Holley, as shown in this link:https://holley.com/products/fuel_systems/carburetors/performance_2_barrels/parts/0-7448. When the 40 was first purchased, (with upside down bezel; quickly rectified that situation!) it ran poorly and frequently backfired. Those symptoms led me to the carb, and I realized that I was not farmiliar with folks running Holley's on thier rigs. Anyway, having rebuilt the carb, do y'all recomend a new setup? should the current one suffice for a while, but in the meantime, need I search for a different carb (i.e. Trollhole rebuild)? Thanks in advance!
P. S. Forgot to say, it's being repainted at the moment, but the time is drawing near when I'll need a good setup on it. Thanks again, and any advice is always welcome!

Stock carbs are very nice. If your rig is that stock, I'd definitely put a stock carb back on it. However, the Holley is a adequate carb, and can be very functional with a bit of work.

Thanks for the advice. A stock carb certainly seems like a good way to go. I guess a little more fooling with the current arrangement will give me a more concrete point of reference. But I do want to keep the idea of going back to a stock carb in mind for future reference. They seem to be quite suitable for the 40's.

The Holley 2 barrel is a good carb, but the down side is that they tend to spill fuel out of their bowl vents on inclines. This problem can be solved by relocating the bowl vents higher up in the air cleaner. There is a kit to do this or you can do it by extending the vents upward with rubber tube.

I would stick with the OEM carb - these issues would pretty much go away.-no kits, no relocation. if it's gunky, They are easier to rebuild than you might think--just look at Pin_Head's videos--he makes it easy.(follow his instructions to the letter)

F engine OEM carbs show up on eBay or MUD from time to time

or maybe some Louisiana Club member has one around in their stash - post up in the local forums

look at the neighboring state's club forums, too

Hi
I have a 71 FJ40. It is my understanding that from 72 to 76 you have a vacuum retard dizzy. I was going to get another carb but was advised I would have to change my dizzy to a vacuum advance dizzy.
I believe if you have the stock dizzy and a different carb than stock it will backfire and not run correctly.
Someone on here may know more about this but this is my understanding. So I purchased a rebuilt stock carb. It runs great now.
Rick
