Did you drive up that canyon?
Crawling up that canyon wouldn't hurt anything.
Well I really did, but things changed.
Monday: Leave Moab for the Maze District, Canyonlands National Park. Arrive at Hans Flat Ranger Station and inquire on the forecast. It was 27* the night before. Supposed to the the same tonight. Lovely. They ask me where I'm going and I tell them I have no plans. "Best kind" he responds. I drive over to the east rim of Horseshoe Canyon. Looks like lots of campers on the west rim where the BLM parking lot is. I'm by myself.
Tuesday: Hike to the Great Gallery. I'm #3 down the canyon as there are already two people at the Gallery when I get there. They were very quiet and I didn't know they were even there at first. After an hour or so more hikers, very loud. Must have been Sierra Club members since sometimes they can't figure out when to keep their mouths shut. Why the hell do they need to talk as if they are in the middle of New York City? I leave, and pass 18 more coming in. Most of them found it necessary to yell at each other too. I decide to be a wimp and drive to Capitol Reef NP for a grassy camp and a toilet. I was feeling better and cook dinner.
Wednesday: Recreation day. It's been decades since I've been to Bryce Canyon and decide to take the extremely scenic drive on UT-12 to have lunch at Ruby's Inn, home of the best t-bone I've every had ... never to be reproduced. After lunch I don't have time for a Park visit, so I head back east and camp at Calf Creek. The last time I was there was July 1977.
Thursday: I get up early to beat the crowds up the canyon. Very cold. I see turkey tracks, then two turkey. There are lots of birds awake and I'm glad to have the canyon to myself to hear and see them. Best bird was an American dipper. Too cool. I'm first up to the falls, but that doesn't last long with the arrival of a couple. Very nice people. They were quiet. I take their picture for them in front of the falls. On the way back I pass four deer. I pass many hikers with cameras and tripods. Their destination was the falls and they don't seem to notice the scenery around them. I pack up the truck and head for Boulder where I treat myself to lunch at the grill. I then turn onto the Burr Trail. I stop at the scenic overlook at the top and have Subaru after Subaru pass byflipoff2:'em). With the creation of the National Monument this place has become popular. My fears came true. Attach a title to a piece of land and people will come in droves. They have. I continue on the Burr Trail to the Wolverine Petrified Wood Natural Area. Nobody there. Good sign so I hang around for awhile looking at rocks. I continue on past Death Hollow (Subaru at the trail head) to Silver Falls Creek where I make camp and make dinner.
Friday: My week is done. I pack up and continue on the Burr Trail across the Waterpocket Fold through Capitol Reef NP. Lots of trails to hike and no time to do them. The Burr Trail ends at Bull Frog at Lake Powell. From there, home.
Nice trip Jon. Yet another place(s) I need to check out...dang this job thing is just getting in the way!
Lots of trails to hike and no time to do them.
Jon: the Maze is easily one of the most spectacular places I've ever seen. It's absolutely amazing how well your pictures capture some of that. Good show!
Dan
Jon is pretty good with a camera...!!
