Replaced head gasket on my 96 Land Cruiser forgot to mark distributor now I can't adjust timing car won't start. . How to adjust timing when it's completely off?

Cylinder #1 TDC, distributor pointing at contact #1. Thats about all there is to it. If it doesn't start there you are probably 180 off.

All else fails - RTF(FS)M - page IG-11.

Verify TDC as Frakencruiser suggested and then proceed......

2. INSTALL DISTRIBUTOR
(a) Install a new O−ring to the distributor.
HINT:
Always use a new O−ring when installing the distributor.
(b) Align the groove of the distributor housing with the protrusion
on the driven gear.
(c) Apply a light coat of engine oil on the O−ring.
(d) Insert the distributor, aligning the center of the flange with
that of the bolt hole on the cylinder head.
(e) Lightly tighten the hold−down bolt.
3. INSTALL DISTRIBUTOR CAP
4. CONNECT DISTRIBUTOR CONNECTOR
5. CHECK IGNITION TIMING (See page EM−10)

Yea I was 180 off but then when I switched 180 deg. Car started but were working really rough tried moving distributor wasnt any better so I decided I'll go one tooth advance. It wouldn't start. I went one tooth retarded and as I start car it revs rite away like crazy. Now i am confused !

Also, double check your plug wires and make sure they are routed properly. If they are just turn the distributor about 20 degrees at a time and try to crank. Once you find a spot that it fires up, slowly turn the dist. until it runs smooth. Then you can ground t1 and e1 in the diagnostic connector and shoot/set for the timing spec and tighten her up.

Wires are fine.

:hhmm:

On my HG job I was a tooth off and wouldn't idle at all. Pulled it out and followed FSM procedures and started right up and idled fine. Jumped the wires to set timing and all was good in the world. I'd double-check using the FSM procedures posted above. It's easy to get the distributor off and swear you're right.

Thank you !! I'll double check.

Hey guys just letting you know. It was throttle body open 30% due to wire pulling it. Re-adjusted started up right away. advanced ignition to 9-8 degree. Engine works perfect Love it. But noticed tranny shifting hard and on freeway when I remove my foot from pedal it decelerates pretty hard ? Anybody had this problem ?

Check the adjustment on the other cable going to the throttle body. It's the transmission control cable.
