Think it is trimmed enough. I think it is a little warped from being spot welded to the other structures. Will have to be careful when tacking it into position to maintain surface uniformity at all joints. Have to run done errands now, so will be after lunch when I get back to it. Might rain as well. D’oh.

First round of tack welds done. Something strange happened to the lower spot weld hole.

Was sanding down the welds with my mini-air belt sander and I think the electric motor for my air compressor crapped out. Damn! Will have to look into that tomorrow. Looking good though. That tool was one of the best purchases this past year.

What is your compressor motor?
Voltage, HP, phase, RPM

Need to pull it to get at nameplate for detailed info, but it is a Baldor, 5Hp, 240V, 1 phase. Compressor is IR.

My compressor was a 5hp, 3ph, 480 so I converted it to 1 ph, 230 v. 3600 RPM.

I bought my motor from eBay.

I actually had a line on a motor at the local Tractor Supply, then their prices jumped over $100 and pushed them past what I could get it for elsewhere.

You're looking at $500+ USD if that's the case. Look into getting it checked and rewound locally if that's the problem.

Can you take pics inside your control box for me? I need to get a correct contactor for mine to finish my conversion. Please make sure the part numbers are visible in the pics. And a pic or two of the wiring diagram.

Turns out the motor was fine. Had it checked at a shop in town where they tested it, and it ran fine. Told me to check the wires between the panel and comp. So, I did when I got back home, and traced the wires back to a switch box that contained some cartridge type fuses. One of the fuses was blown. I had completely forgotten about that box which I had installed. It was hidden by a plastic sheet hanging down from a shelf I built above the electrical panels. I dug up my orig receipt. Purchased the comp at Costco on 26 Sept, 2001. Paid CAN$804 incl taxes. I think the Baldor motor along today would be around US$500. The shop says it was a quality motor. Had to go back into town to find the correct fuses. Ended up going to three places before I found them at a speciality electrical store.

Compressor is running, but having a hard time trying to tension the belt. Motor pulley is slightly misaligned. There is no mechanism to move the motor to apply tension on the belt. Had to cut some wooden blocks in the shape of wedges between the comp base and motor base to force it over.

Some progress.

1. Got the CB radio powered up (blown in-line fuse) and blown acc in-line fuse at starter battery. I will keep it even though I just received my Yaesu FTM-400XDR today. I need a new antenna though as the the orig one I purchased is busted.
2. Solved the power supply for the Kenwood/factory amp yesterday. Details are in my Kenwood DDX393 thread.
3. Was a mixup with the garage and the installation of my new tires. Have an appt this Thursday. Will also get them to fix my lreaking brake line.
4. Received my Yaesu FTM-400XDR today. Will look at installation placement today.

5. Will try to do the following this weekend:
a. Replace low beam bulbs.
b. Install new indoor/outdoor temp sensor/display.
c. Continue cleaning interior.
d. Mock-up of Yaesu unit.

This small stuff is taking a lot longer than I anticipated.
Better off with this than a CB.

Working on the PS rear flare which got ripped off years ago. Also doing the same for the DS front flare. Warm enough today in the sun to paint the bottom of the LRA fuel tank. More pitted than I remember. Has me a little concerned.
On my a good note I was looking at the relay for my 1/2 hp elec air compressor and noticed a lever and flipped it up. Tried it via the switch on my dash and the bugger works! Thought it had crapped out like 2 years ago. Lol!

Ext speaker for Yaesu unit. Hot glued it in place, but it later fell down. Just going to screw it to the dash even though I don’t really want to. Tried Velcro as well, but it is too floppy.

Why not install the HAM radio speaker in the stock subwoofer location at the center console? I doubt you're using the subwoofer and if it's still there, it's probably blown.

When I installed the Kenwood, I decided to keep the stk amp as I like the little speaker in the centre console. It has been upgraded. Never thought about using one of the stk speaker locations though. That would have been a better idea. There is one just below the HAM speaker.

Took a break for a couple of days. Did another pass of welding/grinding/sanding. A coat of rust converter, and then body filler tomorrow. Now thinking of making one of those cargo doors to replace the window(s).

Hmmm…

Going to grind/ hammer down some of the metal high points, and then another skim coat. Hopefully, after that some self-etching primer.

Silly question because I'm not a bodywork guy:

Shouldn't you prime the bare metal first, before you smear on the body filler? Doesn't it hold water and will corrode being against the raw metal?

Prime
Sand
Fill
Sand
Prime
Sand
Paint
Buff
Cut
Polish
scratch
Start over.

Good question. I always applied to bare metal, but will check. I’m now curious.

Getting there. Flat area seems good as well as window channel area. Can’t feel the welded sections in those areas. Will finish it off tomorrow.

Had a nasty headache most of the day. Still have a few low spots, mostly around the bends where the welds were. Rest is good. Hit it with some 400 grit paper, but will need a add a bit of filler in the low spots. Also knocked down some of the high spots again with a punch and hammer.
