Can you tell an h42 from a h41 visually?

The input shaft is different for a 3b diesel application. A 2h diesel uses the same trans as a 2f. (As I understand it.)

All B engine diesels have the same inputshaft, with is different from an F engine, for instance, the schaft for a diesel is longer, but it is interchangeble, if you have the same gears.

So if I'm after a non NA H41 for my appication ('81 BJ42 with 3B motor and 19 spline split t-case) is it essential that I look for a unit that was behind a diesel or is it ok with the gasser units too? If the unit has a 16 spline output, is it possible to swap that out and install my H42 19 spline?

You need a trans with long fine spline input from a 4cyl diesel.
The 2H, 12HT, 2F, 3F use the same coarse spline input.

The output shaft configuration changes over time, so I am unsure if a later model output will slip inside the early gear stack. It's on my to do list to attempt, but hasn't happened yet.

notice the first gear almost leveled where the shift cover mounts
iirc the h42s first gear would be about 1/4 shorter...........

Sorry to dredge up an old thread but does anyone know if the 1978 Canadian fj45 have a H41 or a H42 in it?

Hard to say since we never got a 45 after the 67 model. My guess would be H41 since those were most common in other markets. That information should be on the VIN on the firewall if you have the cruiser to look at.

Jeff Zepp has a 78 canadian 45 and it came with an h42.

Just to keep things accurate for folks reading this in the future:

As Jim C. said, some of the info in this thread by the poster Ricky Cruiser in Belgium is incorrect.

Specifically, the H42 gearing is NOT the same as the H55F.
If anything, the H55F is similar to the H42.

Don't you mean H55F is like a H41 with a overdrive?
