Can you still purchase an OEM charcoal canister (Denso Vapor Canister)?

Hello Mudders,

I just purchased a 96 FZJ80, I will be starting a build thread soon. I have been able to get most of the parts I am looking for, however canisters and visors seam to be impossible to find.. Who is the parts guru here that can get me a new oem canister?

Thanks in advance!

PS i used the search button and know about the Pontiac canister hack.

AFAIK, the OEM charcoal canister was gone long ago.

So no one has a hidden stash, and these aren't available from Japan or Australia?

Guess this is like that scout box i wanted : - /

Apparently, no one in the world makes a direct fit replacement vapor canister for our vehicles. And no, OEM canisters are not available from Amayama or Parts Souq. I contacted Dorman to ask if they sold one for a 96/97 FZJ80, nope, but they said they might look into having one made. That was six months ago.

Dorman does have a New Product suggestion web site, so if
enough of us request a direct fit OEM clone vapor canister we may see one, someday. On their website you can type in the part number you're wanting
them to consider making.

part numbers I could find:

91-92: 77740-60200
93-94: 77740-60310
95-97: 77740-60350

I don't know however what differences there are between
the vapor canisters used in different model years or if they are superceded
part numbers?? Any parts experts out there?

I’d imagine if by some slight, minuscule, highly impossible, .0001% chance you did find one from a dealer it wouldn’t be worth the money. Plenty of people have broken them down, replaced the guts and put them back together that I wouldn’t see spending a large amount of cash very beneficial.

I'm finding OEM canisters used online.
Problem is you can't trust they actually function properly, despite what the seller may say.
My only option where I live is to lay hands on the used ones and do the FSM function test on them.

Should I find more than one...I could post their location for sale on here?? Might know more this weekend or next week.
FWIW, my 285kmi Original OEM can looks brand new, but it's completely locked up (clogged/check valves frozen).

I've picked up a couple of used canisters along the way, they all
have the same issue.

On the visor...you're talking sun visor? Interior driver/passenger? Cruiseroutfitters.com has a few... Cruiser Outfitters

Edit - belay that last, sailor! They don't have any for the 80. :\

There is a non-US market 100 series canister that might work for you. Probably have to shave off the bracket though. 77740-60400
(edit: more specifically UZJ100)

I see the pic of the 100, but that canister might also be for the 105 - which is an 80 chassis, drivetrain, and 1FZ, just with the 100 body. It's the true descendant of the 80. Not the 100 as many people think.

About $175 on partsouq.

Has an OEM replacement canister been found for the 1FZ?

AC Delco 215-135 GM cured my tank pressure issues for 2.5 years now. I think i modified it slightly to install but nothing more than a few minutes.

Seems like the dimensions fit, "8.8 x 5.6 x 5.4 in"

The illustration shows three connections on top of the canister. Is it a good guess that they moved the bottom overflow line up to the top? Or what is the third top connection here if it's not the overflow?

I had the FSM tests done, passed everything.
I still get the pressure “blow off” when I crack open the fuel cap at fill ups.
If not functioning properly, is it ONLY an emission issue? Or is it an engine efficiency/power, MPG issue, or anything else?

The short, quick blowoff at the pump (usually) is normal for all my vehicles.
10 minutes of boiling fuel @ 9000ft is not. I'm not convinced it is the altitude causing it.
As I'm not convinced a clogged canister is holding back the pressure I'm seeing released out the filler neck.
My issue might still be the tank check valve being stuck shut, holding the pressure in the tank that is then only released by cracking the filler cap.
That said, since I know my canister is a paperweight, I have to start there and replace it. I'll keep updating if I see any movement toward resolution on my end.

And for sure, I'd like to NOT start smelling gas fumes like many others say they experience. As it is, I've never smelled gas fumes under normal operation. And didn't even when the pressure was YUGE in my tank. That's another reason I think it's the tank check valve closing off the vent tube to the canister.

I know this was/is a big problem with the 200 series at elevation. Might check with those dudes.

If anyone out there has one of the non-US canisters shown in Hoser's post above (#10), could you post up the rough measurements, H x W?

The OEM FZJ80 vapor canister measurements are roughly 7-1/2" H x 4-1/2" W
