Hello! Thanks for a really great forum--I could read the posts and Newbie links for days.

My 1990 Range Rover Classic recently blew up (actually, it just started on fire, but "blew up" sounds more interesting) and I need a new toy. The RRC was lifted and rigged for rock crawling, and it was great fun for that. Unfortunately, I have to drive long distances to do any rock crawling, and the RRC had some kind of major malfunction on every road trip.

So, here I am thinking about switching to a more reliable FZJ. I'm worried about the wheelbase--112.2 inches comapared to 100 for the RRC. What difference can I expect as a result of the extra 12 inches? Be nice, please. Does anybody out there rock crawl with both a swb and lwb vehicle?

Thanks for what I'm sure will be interesting reading. ;)

And he's a wimp wheeler to boot...;)

Doug, you show-off.

Where do you live that you have to drive so far?

I think you will be very happy with an 80 for any type of driving you will do.

Doug is getting worse that Pimp in posting pics of his hoard of cruisers

Here are some others (than Doug)

Rubicon (rock crawling) and Death Valley (expedition type) video - to complement the above pics. 40 (swb), 80 (lwb) series, and the lone Discovery II featured. 4runner and a mini Toyota truck.

Actually, Ken, your rig was the only one I saw on rocks when I first checked out IH8MUD. I thought YOU were the only one wheeling.:) I'm glad to see there are so many others out there.

Careful 'Ken', ya gots a stocker .. :grinpimp:

Okay--you all sold me! I can't wait to find my 80 and start modifying. My Land Rover friends are going to kick my ass, but they'll have to catch me first.

ConcreteJungle--I live just north of Santa Barbara, California. We've got mud and sand, but no rocks. There may be some big rocks on private property, but it doesn't belong to anyone I know. Oprah Winfrey or Michael Douglas, maybe. :) I'm sure Doug has better luck finding rocks in NoCal. That's an eight hour drive for me--two days in a Range Rover. ;)

TiredIronGRB--do you have a supercharger on your rig? Is that the significance of the TRD symbol?

Thank you all again for posting photographic evidence of what your 80's can do!

One of the dangers of being a prolific poster . . .:D

When looking for an 80 don't forget the LX450, and of course LOCKERS!

TiredIronGRB what is the strap on the front of your ARB for?
