I have been installing a alarm/keyless/remote starter (Viper 5701), I have successfully got all the alarm portion installed, now I have to wire in the heavy gauge starter wiring. This involves tapping in to the starter switch wiring. I want to create my own "T-harness" that will plug in to the switch harness then into the cowl harness, I will splice into this harness with my remote start wires. This would allow me to solder and heat shrink all connections on a bench outside of the car, then simply plug in the "T harness" into the OEM connectors.

I know I can buy the cowl harness ($3k) and ignition switch ($100) and harvest these connectors, but is there somewhere that I can buy just the connectors? Are these connectors proprietary, or is there another source to get ones that would fit?

I really do not relish trying to solder and heat shrink, under the dash, where there is virtually no slack in the wiring harness. I want to avoid the "T-tap" type connectors, as all the install recommendations I have read, say to avoid them for the heavy gauge starter wiring.

Good news is, I will hopefully have a writeup, at least on the alarm/keyless entry install, that uses the Toyota alarm/keyless wiring harness, so you can wire up the aftermarket alarm harness and OEM connector, outside the vehicle, then just plug in, except for the siren wiring, and hood pin switch.

I have been able to buy OEM connectors and splices frim Dan

On the back of each OEM connector there is a 5-number code. That code corresponds with the last five digits of the part number with the first part being 909xx- (your connector number).

CDan can then reference to a connector catalog that he's got up his sleeve.

:)

OEM splices are available as well.

Awesome! Thanks guys. I have an PM into cdan, before I read Beno's reply. I will try to get the connector numbers to simplify things.

The connector on the cowl wire harness side is #10873. I could not find a number on the ignition cylinder connector.

EDIT: Beno, I am a bit confused, how do I convert that to a P/N? is it 909xx-10873? (if so, what is XX?) or 90910-873? or??? Thanks.

Interested :) Thanks FT41, look forward to the write up on this.

If I can get this remote start part figured out without too much cost or hassle, it will be really cool. Best part is, the alarm was only $122 (way cheaper than it should be) because it has pink key fobs. Pink is not a problem for me, it's like it was made just for a LX! :D

Well, some internet research indicates that I am looking for 90980-10873 (female, cowl wire harness) and 90980-10872 (male, ignition cylinder).

Sorry Ben: most connectors have the following first 5 numbers: 90980-XXXX.

Sometimes, 90981-XXXXX

Howdy! Somewhere I have the CD of all Toyota OEM wire connectors that I got from a Master Parts Tech a long time ago. They actually have a lot of them that area common to older Nissans also. I used some on a 1983 280ZX. I did download this CD to the webmaster a while back, so it should be here on MUD somewhere. John

Thanks. Post #9 has the actual p/n I am looking for, I determined they are available by checking some Toyota dealers online, now to figure out the wire terminals that I need, they are listed in the wire harness repair manual, so I will check that next...

Per Toyota Parts: Genuine Toyota Parts, Toyota OEM Parts The connectors and terminals would be $116! Looks like prices are about 20% off MSRP, hopefully cdan can come through a little cheaper, or I may have to try to get them from a junkyard.

90980-10873 HOUSING, CONNECTOR F $6.21 x1= $6.21
90980-10872 HOUSING, CONNECTOR M $7.62 x1= $7.62
82998-12370 TERMINAL, REPAIR W/W $4.67 x7= $32.69
82998-12330 TERMINAL, REPAIR W/W $4.67 x4= $18.68
82998-12380 TERMINAL, REPAIR W/W $4.67 x7= $32.69
82998-12340 TERMINAL, REPAIR W/W $4.67 x4= $18.68

Total: $116.57

After more googling, I actually found a picture of one of the Toyota terminal repair, that I need. It looks to be in its original packaging, and leads me to believe that buying one p/n will net you 10 pieces, which makes more sense. If this is the case, it would bring the cost of the assembled parts to about $28. That is reasonable for me.

I have one of the port-installed RS3000 keyless systems lying around here. It has the 10873 and corresponding 10872 connectors on it, attached together with 6" of wire. If you want it let me know!

All terminal repair wires are priced per one, not ten. They just come in ten packs.

Beno, that is a disappointment, if cdan can't get 'em way cheaper than what other dealers have 'em listed at.

96r50, I may take you up on that. If some other ideas don't work out, I will PM you about the harness.

Ben,

Just for curioity's sake I checked my prices here, but I can't do any better than that here, especially with shipping.

G'luck with it!!

Mot

Thanks for checking. You were in the back of my mind, as a possible source...
