OK, we planned a possible camping trip this weekend in the Jemez. the Williams' will be out there. i am packing to leave tomorrow morning (Thursday). the plan is the pipeline road near the Valle Caldera Reserve. go out 126 past Fenton Lake. turn north up 117 and back East on the pipeline road. you can also turn off 126 onto 103 or 527(pipeline rd), go up to 117, turn back south a short distance and then east back onto pipeline rd. i have a Santa Fe National Forest map(from 1975) that i am using.
anyone have better input/directions? i am estimating that this area is the one we discussed at the meeting.

who is planning on coming out? you can meet up w/ us on Friday, Sat or Sunday. we will return on Sunday. you are welcome to caravan w/ us Thurs too. i will look for a good spot for multiple families. oh, i will be in the big silver Ford F350 (i know, i know).

I'm game. I need a break, but won't be able to leave until Saturday late morning.

OK, we are outta here. hope to see some of you up there!:steer:

come up for the day sat or sun. if you like too!

flagging

by the way. we will put up some red ribbon flagging to help you find us. i plan to try going up 117 first... if i can find it.

back home

we had a great time. didn't see a soul the whole time. including HDC folks. it rained and hailed really hard while looking for a camping spot. the next rain was yesterday evening for an hour or two. flowers were in full bloom and the area looks good.

we did find 117. we've snow wheeled as a club there before. we did find the pipeline road...the next day. i thought i found it the 1st day, but it was really overgrown, so we decided to go back to a side road we saw. made camp on the edge of a huge meadow.
2nd day we drove around to explore and found the real pipeline road. it does get pretty washed out and rough. rough enough i turned around in my big boat of a truck. any stock cruiser would be able to do it, i was just too long to feel comfortable as the only vehicle.

we'd have loved to see any of you there, but had a good time w/o you anyway.:grinpimp:

here's a few pics of the weekend. the campsite from front and back. the third, was the rain and hail the first day. the side of the hood and under the wipers is not glare, it's hail.

the blue tarp roof thing we got at walmart for $10. it made it's worth up this wekkend alone! we watched the rain come across the meadow and enjoyed the rain instead of having to hide in the tent or truck. it also kept the wood dry.;) then Jill got to collect some wildflower seeds for her flower garden.

Looks like a great time. We had similar weather in the Pecos. It didn't rain at all on Friday, which seemed strange since I'm used to it raining every afternoon and most nights whenever I've been there in late July and early August. The mosquitoes and flies sure were happy about the lack of rain though. But it tried to make up for it yesterday. It started raining about 3 and didn't stop until we were around La Bajada on our drive back. At least the rain kept the bugs away.

I caught a bunch of brown trout, ranging in size from about 3" up to one that was 9". That 9" fish seemed like a monster compared the the more typical 5" - 6" fish caught out of Holy Ghost Creek. It was all dry-fly action which is so much more fun than wet-fly fishing.

We got to play some football in the morning before the rain started.

This actually wasn't the smallest fish of the day, just the first. So it got a picture.

This was a more typical ~ 6" fish.

Nice pics dudes. You didn't let the rain dampen your fun it looks like.

Don't you just love little browns? I'm still partial to the brookies in Maine, though.

I took the girls to the fishery in Durango the other day. They loved feeding and watching the babies (fry).

Great stuff guys.

 is this code for something? Sounds like dialogue from a Guy Ritchie movie.

The browns are fun, especially when the water's clear and they're really keyed into surface food. They pretty much hammered anything I threw at them. I started with an orange stimulator and caught a few until it fell apart. I then switched to a Royal Wulff and never switched again.

There are lots of brook trout in the Animas. I've caught some upstream from Silverton. Go north out of Silverton and then cross the river on the road that goes up to a mine tour (to the east). Less than a mile up that creek is an area that has a lot of large pools. I did the best in the creek but you could still see a lot of fish in the pools.

How's that for code talking Rory?

So, I get the idea, but just where is the secret treasure?

I told you to turn on the road that leads to the "mine" tours.

You guys found my secret spot! Camped there at least half a dozen times. Saw someone else on maybe one occassion. The grass is great for kids.

I went camping up to Coyote Creek State park last week. If you are ever up near there, go by and visit the Fed Hatchery there where they are raising the Gila trout. We took the tour, and were able to see some of the 5 yr old whales in there. You should have seen the size of some of them... But sorry, no pics of the fish
