I thought I'd post a few pics of my latest midnight hour project. Basically I ran into a little bit of unexpected cruiser funds and I somehow convinced the :princess: that a RTT would be the perfect thing to blow it on. Fernando at camping labs had a great deal on RTT's at the time so I picked one up and made a cheap rack to support it. I was able to pick the Mule gutter clamps up from Kaleb for a steal during his end of summer sale. I shopped around for ramps, but I wasn't able to find anything comparable to the Moose ramp for the price. I had two ramps already but neither of them are built as well or fit this application as well as the Moose Industries ramp.

I followed Johnny's excellent writeup found here:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/59928-new-how-tech-80-series-aluminum-roof-rack.html

and here:

The J-Rack

Being on a very limited budget and since this is primarily a rack to support a tent, I didn't add the aluminum strips to the loading surface at this time. I am still debating on putting a rounded front non-weight bearing strip around the front to finish it off, but I am still figuring out the final details.

As you can see this is still a work in progress as the rubber tail gait tabs are still attached. I figured I'd leave them on until I figure out what my plans are to finish off the front in case I need them. The rear will probably stay how it is since I like the way the bottom of the ramp is finished with the angled piece.

The Mule clamps are awesome and super stout. I highly recommend them. I was able to keep the mule clamps on their lowest setting on all but the rear pair, so this rack sits as low as possible (factory rack removed, ribs still in place) and I still can clear the hospital parking garage by a mere 3". As it sits it is just over 8' tall at the highest point.

The Camping Lab tent seems really well built. I haven't had a chance to test it out during a trip yet, but the :princess: gives it's preliminary comfort rating an A+. I'm pretty sure this was the ticket to getting the :princess: to come on more camping trips with the boy and I.

Please excuse the poor night pics. I finished mounting everything at midnight and I was on borrowed time since the :princess: was nice enough to let me do a little wrenching on our anniversary:eek:. I'm not sure how I pulled that one off, but my wife was happy with the end result and gaining her parking spot back in garage.

I'll keep this thread updated after I am able to test out this setup. I just got called to be the Scout Master of our local group so I'll be going on some campouts soon if I can get a call-free weekend. Many thanks to Fernando, Johnny, and Kaleb for making this an affordable endeavor.:cheers:

Last ones. I didn't have time to actually set the whole tent up but you get the idea.

I forgot to mention that this is the large RTT that Fernando sells (71"X94" fully opened)

Nicholas,
Is your RTT going to stay mounted up there all the time? I'd like to hear your thoughts after driving around with it up there for a few months. I'm considering getting that tent and leaving it up there also.

Wait, aren't you from Utah?

You're going to need a much larger tent.

I left the tent up top for about a month, but I took it down for the winter. You can definitely feel it up there. I think it dropped my all around MPG by 1-1.5MPG. You can really notice it up there if there is a cross or head wind too. I didn't have it on any off camber trails, but I could tell that it handles differently on very steep climbs in low gear. I couldn't imagine what it would feel like with a foot of snow on top:eek:.

I suppose you could leave it up there year round, but it only takes about a half hour or less to remove the bolts and slide it off. My wife helped me put it up and take it off, so it's doable as long as you have another set of hands.

I was pretty worried about mildew issues especially since I'm in the midwest. I'm not sure if anyone has had problems with that before, but it seems like it would be a perfect medium for mold growth in humid summer months.

You know it Eric;) That's why I went with the biggest tent they had. We're well on our way to meeting it's capacity since our second is in the oven; due May 20th.

So a little update.

It turns out that my wife loves the tent. She was thoroughly impressed with the comfortable mattress and ease of set up. The only thing she wasn't too fond of was climbing down the ladder in a rain storm with a full bladder. But that's what happens when you go camping when you're pregnant. :flamingo:

My little boy absolutely loved the tent too. Perhaps a little too much as he kept running around and jumping all over us before he finally fell asleep.

I finished the front of the rack after removing the RTT for the season.

Some of you have asked how the 80 handles with the RTT. You might be able to see in the pics below that I have the rack set pretty low (maybe an inch above the factory rack center ribs) to keep the center of gravity as low as possible. I removed the factory rack side rails a while a ago, so it allowed me to set the mule clamps on about the lowest setting.

Why not take the rack off too? Seems like it would be light enough to do easily.

Your truck looks good! 35's on a medium lift looks nice.

Did the med lift sag with the rtt up there?

Looks good finished off.

Thanks Adam.

Thanks, I keep trying to convince myself of that so I don't go out and get 37's when these wear out.

The rack isn't very heavy, but I don't have a whole lot of room to store it. We are renting while I'm in school and the owners won't let us drill anything into the ceiling, otherwise I'd think about putting it up there.

In the unloaded pictures you might be able to see that I have a very slight rake (maybe 0.5-1") in the back and that's with only one 3rd row seat and the high lift jack. Before I put on the 4x4 Labs bumper the rake was even more noticeable (~2"). With the RTT, one 3rd row seat, and the jack, and no other gear or cargo it sits pretty level, definitely not sagging in the rear. I'd imagine if I loaded it up it might start to sag. However, we had it loaded up really heavy with tools and junk when we moved this last summer and it didn't sag, but now with the RTT + tools/cargo it might sag. I'll post back the next time I have the RTT up there and am carrying a lot of cargo.

I'm running medium springs front and rear (~2.5-3" caster bushings) for the past year and I have been pleased with the results. Hopefully Nay won't convince me to run 37's/FOR lift in the future.;)

Nick-

Looks great.

Now you have to get a ladder added to Luke's bumper for easy access. :)

Indeed. That's why I went with the dual swingout. Just didn't have the $$ at the time to get the ladder too. Someday I'd like to get a ladder and a cooler holder bolted on to one of the rungs.:grinpimp:

Looks pretty slick, Nicholas!

Thanks Mot. I tried convincing the :princess: that we should buy one of your tents too since you were practically giving them away and they were located close to my folks place. I told her that surely we would need a kids tent bolted to a adventure trailer in addition to the RTT. She gave me a big one of these:rolleyes:. I don't blame her.

At this rate I just might have to even drop it off at your folks' door step or something as I haven't been able to let it go... :hillbilly:

Sorry to hear that Mot. My little bro is a traveling roasted corn salesman in the summer and could use a RTT. He could run up there and pick it up in a days notice. PM me if it gets to that point, he's a student but I'm sure he could scrounge up something for it. I hate to see you give it away. That's painful.

Thanks, Nicholas!

As with a lot of things I'm "selling" if I don't end up selling I'll end up using them for myself (I always tell my wife that I'm buying things to sell to supposrt us financially, but you guys know better/how it is, right? :hillbilly:)

Now if I can only find someone who wants a beat-up motorcycle though!

Sorry for the hijack!!
