Broke the knobs off my darn BVSV when I was putting it back in my lower thermostat housing after a thermostat change!! CRAP!!

It's the green one the screws into the top port.

I don't have a direct replacement but I do have 2 that came off of my 85' FJ60. A purple one and a reddish one.

Does anyone know if I can substitute one of the 60 BVSV's onto the 40 to replace the one I broke?

Thanks Gents!

Sure that may work but I guess I don't want to go go through the process if someone can tell me it's not gonna work.

Why the different colors BVSV's on all our cruisers? Seems like the vacuum would start/stop at different temps perhaps??? Can anyone shed any light on exactly how the BVSV works? That may shed some light on if the 60's BVSV's are compatible.

if it was a 81+ fj40 I would say YES it will work......as they are identical

but not sure on a 78....I say give it a try, its not like you need to drain all the anti freeze to put it in

Thanks guys havnt had time to check the 60 FSM yet.

It seems logical that the different colors create vacuum at different temps.

That being said if it creates vacuum at any temp it'll probably be beneficial it's not as if the emissions systems on the rigs are extremely highly sensitive or calibrated....

Guess I might as well throw it in and see what happens.

Found this on the 60 forum.....

The violet BVSV is used by the EGR system to prevent the EGR valve from functioning until the coolant temp reaches 86º F.
The pink BVSV is used by the choke opener to prevent the choke opener from functioning below 41º F.
Neither are deal breakers. If the engine is allowed to warm up a bit before driving, you'll never miss the violet bvsv. If starting the engine below 41 ºF, the choke will crack open a little sooner than optimum.

Wonder if the temps are the same for our 40's....

Fast thanks for the link, that's a cheap option!

Seems like this might be a candidate for the FAQ--Color vs temp.

They probably vary slightly based on engine and carb changes.

Not to my knowledge. The color matches the temp across all Toyota models. They are used in lots of cars and trucks. You can find them in Celicas in the junk yard. The violet one is the most easily available. The brown one is hard to find. Maybe only for CA model FJ40s?

Yah if we could figure out the temps the various colors create vacuum at it would be cool to put it in the FAQ.

Still looking for those specific temps. Nowhere near my FSM's tonight.

Ok. I pulled the emission manual for my 78 and 79 2F and here a where used and actuation temp for the BVSV

78' Brown - spark control (distributor). Opens at 129 deg F. Maintains neutral spark advance/retard (no vacuum to dizzy) through VSV until engine temp rises above 129 deg F

78' Blue - EGR. Opens at 129 deg F. Enables EGR after coming up to temp

79' Pink - Air Injection. Opens at 66 deg F. Enables air injection from air rail.

79' Violet - Choke Opener. Opens at 111 deg F. Actuaries choke opener

79' spark control (brown in 78) is replaced with pink for AI
