Delta and Anthony, thanks for the feedback. One thing I liked about this one was that I did not have to travel to get it, or pay to have it shipped. I felt like that in itself was worth something, so I'd have been willing to pay a little more than the rig was worth. But I will keep on looking, because I sure aint gonna pay their asking price on that unit.

Again, thanks.

Okay, thanks for the info. I looked at the color chart before I posted but misread it or something
The stereo, that's what I thought. Pretty much everything is standard. Maybe the washers are een option here (in combination with Xenon), I don't know.
I can't see the '06 brochure, your link goes to the toyotareference color chart :hhmm:

The guy doesn't get back to me. The whole buying experience so far has been less then pleasurable to say the least. I have had my fair share of scams when trying to find a LC/LX. I get the strangest responses when asking for more info, some are plain aggressive. Not really people I would like to deal with. Or they just don't reply at all like this one. It sure takes all the fun out of finding a new ride.

When I was selling my truck I really put in some effort in it and took time to answer questions etc.. but I guess I am different. Now with money burning in my pocket it seems that everybody is ignoring me.

The only one that is still an option is the black one in Toronto.. As far as I can tell it is missing the rear seats, the rear entertainment system doesn't seem stock and it should come with headphones. It also doesn't have those washers, but it's a US vehicle.

The brochures are directly under the color galleries chart, in the same frame. :)

I've also put much effort into selling past rigs, always give good pictures with lots of detail in the add, and make sure to answer all questions in a concise manner, because you never know who the buyer will be.

Dang, I had a roller coaster 7 month search for my truck, in the end I am completely okay with it taking that long, because I got exactly what I wanted/needed. Keep the faith! Press on! :)

Good to hear he got back to you and sounds legit! Keep us posted!

No action on my 98

I've put my '98 on here in the classifieds for $9500 and not getting any action. Do you guys think that I'm asking too much or is it that I'm in the midwest and everyone thinks it will be a rust bucket (which it isn't). I've looked at what dealers are asking and other classifieds for private sales and I don't feel that I am out of line at all. I am going to put it on craigslist and maybe ebay, but was hoping that someone on here would appreciate it more. Part of me really doesn't even want to sell it. The wife can be pursuaded either way, but we still have that mentality that over 100k miles is scary. After reading this site I am having second thoughts though. We did have the issue not quite a year ago where it went into kind of a limp mode with the tranny. I had a friend that was a Lexus mechanic flush/maint. the tranny and he couldn't find anything wrong after. It's been fine every since after 3k miles. I would like to step up to an 05-07 though. Maybe I'm insane and should just get the timing belt/front end maint. done and keep it.

4 Lo

Hello all,

I am new to this board but shopping for a used LC. I went to test drive a 2004 LC in great shape but was wondering how to make sure 4lo is working on the transfer case. During the test drive I put the car in N and shifted into 4L, the car lurched a couple times...when I started slowly driving...does that mean the 4lo engaged? I did not see any lights or on the dash indicating the car was in 4L, does the transmission also need to be in "2L" for the system to engage? The dealer was basically of no help and I couldn't find the information on a google search.

Thanks in advance,
Manish

100k is nothing on a modern Toyota, not to mention on a Land Cruiser. Financially speaking, it is probably quite a bit cheaper to just maintain what you have, then to go with something comparable but newer. I would try to dismiss that arbitrary number (100k mi), so it doesn't factor into your car buying/selling decision. Really, unless you have a really low end domestic vehicle, 100k is hardly near the end of life for most modern vehicles anymore. Though I do understand the itch for something "newer".

Thanks for the vote of confidence Ben. I think it is just the little scare with the tranny that we had and then to see on here how much it costs to repair/replace one, but that could happen any time and to any vehicle I realize. I'm not scared of high mile vehicles and this is coming from a guy that has had 5 honda civics ran up to 250k each when the body starts to rust. Timing belts, water pumps, starters, alternators, and struts are the usual suspects and expected. I've been back and forth between selling my 05 Sierra and just keeping the LC w/ a trailer. I put maybe 9k miles a year on the truck so I don't really need both since my civic is my DD.

I will have to agree with Ben too. You should keep the 100. A low mileage '98 is great, but a lot of (ignorant) people don't know. That's probably why there aren't to many reactions on your add. Keep it and you'll have a classic in a couple of years.
And you know what you have now. With a replacement you will have to take a chance again. The history of the vehicle is more important then mileage or age alone. There is always a chance something breaks, but a LC/LX is a pretty good bet when it comes to reliability. Keep up maintenance and it will last forever. And if something significant breaks, just replace it. It might seem expensive but it will be peanuts compared to the money you loose yearly on depreciation.
I am in a somewhat similar situation but still looking for a decent hundy. I sold my ('08) Sierra and a classic car to finance the purchase. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a higher mileage one. I got fed up with domestic stuff (no offence). My DD is a FJ40.

Best year and LC or LX to buy

I have owned a built 94 locked and OME lifted with slee ft and r bumpers, sliders, ext..

It worked very well but its sold

I am now considering a 100

What is the best year (not looking to spend a ton so earlier 100)

Should i go LX or LC?

Whats the deal with the air suspension? Was it avail on the LC?

I was thinking a 98-99 with r locker and a slee lift, bumpers and sliders...

PLEASE help with info on how they work and how it will compare to my 94 80

Thanks guys
Matt

98-99 has a 2 pinion diff and usually require an ARB locker or at least the diff from one. 2000 and on had the 4 pinion diff, but lacked the locker, upgraded to A-TRAC and a 4 pinion diff. After 2003 it came with a 5 speed tranny and nav standard. 2006+ came with the VVT-i and added HP and AHC.... Kinda condensed but those are the main differences...

So they do make a fromt locker that will fit the 98-99 diff? Can i change the carrier to the 4 pinion?

Is Atrac better than real lockers?

Based on $$$ im looking at a 2000 max

What about LX vs LC? Does anyone use the AHC or is it crap and just get a LC?

Mcgee - this pry sounds stupid, but if you lived down the street from me, I'd pry walk over, look it over, buy it, and drive it home.

I'm old school enough that buying something long distance is hard for me; I'm not used to it.

WAY too high, walk away and keep looking. I wouldn't even buy that LC at $14k. Start looking out of state, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, etc. Lots of selection and you will find one that suits the bill.

I would tend to agree with Anthony re the 14K being to much, however based on my experience trying to by a 100 series over the last 10 days.

Dealers seem to think these are GOLD plated, last Saturday the local Subaru dealer took in a 98. It has 120K miles on it, no service history - has not been served at Toyota dealer since 04.

The 90 K has not been done, the back bumper is destroyed- I wanted to buy it. They are asking 15K for it, I offered 10K as it sat (not detailed, with the previous owners crap still in it)

Was going to do the 90k myself and order a rear bumper from ARB, sales manager said "aint going to happen and walked away"

Book is 13,500 (CLEAN RETAIL)

ended up getting an 02

Sorry for posting this again, but I wanna make an offer on this 04 LC. My basic question is whether or not there is a dash light signifying the vehicle is in 4 LO and if not how can one verify if the transfer case is actually working.

Thanks

The transmission should be in Neutral before shifting to Low. The lurch was 4L engaging harshly from its Neutral position as the transmission was spinning while still in gear.

MAtt,

Thanks for your response. The transmission was in in neutral and the car was at a complete standstill when I engaged 4 LO. After I then put the car back into gear (in 4LO) and gave it some light gas it lurched a couple times and then drove smoothly. Is this something to worry about, or is that how the system behaves normally? Also, are there any indicators on the dash that should show the car is in 4 lo?

Both my wife's and mine are 98 LC's with the factory rear locker. I'm adding a TJM front air locker. Already purchased, just need to install. If I like it, one goes into the wifies too. She's running 295 BFG A/T's and I'm afraid she'll blow the front end soon if I don't get her one. For me it's a must. I'm running 35" BFG MT's.

Bottom line we like our 98's. I thing the AHC is a headache when you want to do your suspension lift. Cost is about the same for either a LC or LX of same year to purchase, but you'll spend more for suspension, unless you do it yourself.

My 2 cents.

A Front locker is available from several vendors.

The AHC system is reliable for the most part but does require maint. If you intend to mod the truck then it's probably better to start with a Land Cruiser.

The ATRAC system is very good and will move you through obstacles very well. There are circumstances where a diff lock is superior and times when the benefit of the ATRAC shines. You can add a locker to a later model (2000+) and have both systems.

I put together a grid of various differences of the years http://tlcfaq.com/main/2012/08/land-cruiser-100-series-model-differences/

I need advice

I ave convinced the wife that I need a LC. After years of work she is on board. I am looking at 450's 470's. She would like a 470. I found a 470 with 140K is that too many miles? should I hold out for a 450 0r get a 470 with a rear locker. Thanks

140k is nothing... as long as it has been maintained regularly.

Are you sure you want the Lexus variety? They're pretty... but the auto-height control is something I personally don't care to have.
