As many of you guys have done, I am pondering the move to a hundy from a built 80...I just don't get as crazy as I used to and would like a little more comfort and luxury (and a V8;)) So my question for this thread is this:

Do you all think that it is possible to get into a decent locked 98-00 with less than 150K on the clock and a 2.5" with 285's for less than $10.5K?

I know service interval on timing chain is 90K so that would be a requirement as well...
I think you'll be lucky to find a stock LC w/ under 150k for $10.5k or less - the LCs that I've seen for under that amount have at least 180k miles on them, most over 200k miles. Of course, price varies greatly by area, and how quickly someone wants to sell their rig.

i found a black 2005 LX470 with 122000KMS from a luxus dealer with 2 year/40,000KM warranty for $30,000. i think its a pretty good deal

what do you guys think ? what do you think i should offer ?

Seems High to me.

You can get a 2004-2005 in the low 20's. 2006's start in the high 20's

when I was looking I didnt see much price difference between the 100 and LX470 in my area

okay thanks. the LC's are not available in canada anymore. so we dont really have a choice, and the LX are not verry common here, i saw a 2006 for 24K a few months back but it was a private sale, so i was thinking if i can get them to come down a bit from 30K, from a dealer with a warranty wouldent be that bad.

Yeah, I've been looking a bit...seems to be ranging from $9500 to $14K for stock and sub 180K...I just am not finding a lot of offerings with lifts...mostly stockers, which is fine. Good base knowledge.

you would be hard pressed to find one with a lift on it already unless you find it in Mud Classifieds and if you do it will most likely have over 180K on it.

I missed an 04 with ARB front and back, 75K, OME lift and near perfect a year ago for $23K. THe guy that owned it just put the stuff on because he liked the way it looked. I literally missed it by 3 minutes.

you just don't find them built. but it doesn't cost too much to put a lift in a 100.

Interesting that they did the timing belt 33k miles before its required....

Other Toyotas of that vintage had a 60K recommendation. Just speculating.

You also have to remember, many dealers recommend 3k mi oil changes (=more money in their pocket). I wouldn't put it past one to recommend an early timing belt change. But as mentioned, there is a time interval as well, not just mileage.

Not affiliated, but thought I’d share – 2001 LC w/ 60k miles and no nav for $25k:
2001 Toyota Land Cruiser

Typically mileage like this is either due to a person living within 5 or so miles to their work or it sits in the garage alot and is an extra vehicle. You can which by viewing the truck and see how the exterior is doing.

Another worse case is it's been in a horrible wreck and in a body shop OR in a mechanics place as it's a lemon. I had a friend pick up a twin turbo Z that was in this last condition, in and out of the dealer it seemed forever so it had extremely low miles.
Lastly a long nasty divorce where it sits in the garage with no drivers as they fight over all the assets for years (seen this for 7 years).

It is interesting that a 2000 with 180k books out at 9.5 to 11.7k in kbb

Im in the same position with what Im looking for. Stuff at work changed and now I have to commute every shift instead of driving a company vehicle. My 80 has 207k miles on it and I dont want to kill it with a 2k+ miles a month commute. Plus the part about an 80 on 35s not being gas friendly. 100s arent great mileage wise but mid teens is more appealing than 11. But I dont want a high mileage 100 knowing the miles Ill add to it.

Sadly a 4th gen 4Runner is closer to the price range with ok miles and will still be a V8. But Im concerned the 4Runner wont hold up as well the 100.

If you're commuting why not buy a $1000 Tercel that gets 25 highway?. throw it away when you are done. Still buy the 100 of course but why use a hammer when a screwdriver will do?

I have looked at doing this. I don't have the room to keep a third vehicle and with my drive being all highway I don't want to be in a smaller car. Most of the $1k cars I've seen aren't up to going 20k miles a year all highway.

My wife has a shorter drive than me so we may just swap vehicles every few weeks to give the Cruiser a break.

Hey JT, try Cargurus.com and Carsforsale. Both great websites I used to find mine. Also Romer posted in our forum a nice 100 in Broomfield.

One thing to consider is going with an 00-02, You could find them with low 100k for 11-14. They would have Atrac vs a rear locker but then you could add a rear locker and have ATRAC, as well. Which is a pretty unstoppable combo.

03s are going to have many nice upgrades, 5speed tranny and side curtain airbags..drawback is the NAV/climate control.

There was a built up one in Virginia but that was in early December. And that is a haul for a rig. If I had to do it all over again, I would only buy from California..The underbodies and engine bays look like they have just rolled off the show room floor if they have been taken care of. Cali is like a time machine.

Thanks Chris,

I'll check those out

I think I'm actually focusing on 98's & 99's due to the rear locker. I've never had a cruiser with a front locker (or A-Trac for that matter) and 2 with just rear lockers and have never found myself in over my head with that set up. That and the 98's and 99's are going to be the least expensive (at the potential cost of mileage) and if I'm going to trade Norman out, I want to maximize the ability to get a lift on it and some tires to start out with...I won't abide sitting on the deck after having the vantage I've had for a while. I wouldn't even be afraid of 170+K if the belt had been done...

Corbet also says the locker-atrac combo is cool, plus the 5spd Autos after 03 but then you are getting into a vehicle that is in the 12-18K it seems...

Whatever it is, it will have to be sweet to let go of Norman.

Did any 98 or 99 Lexus 470's come with rear locker?

Same boat as you. Scratch finding a built one for that money. At least that is the market here. 150K 98-00 $13-16K here.

I've looked at 9 so far and none were in better cosmetic shape that my 80.

I had to pull my 80 ad. My search is getting discouraging. Even went to the benz dealer for what appeared to be a beautiful 03...it was from PA and was rusted underneath, and every body panel had a ding. pics online really don't show anything.

I'm seriously considering keeping the 80 for fun or swapping it for a 40, and just buying a commuter instead.
