By extensive service history, do you mean its had lots of problems or that the regular services have been completed. I checked history on rigs I was looking at and found rigs that fell into both categories.
 
I'd agree with Gottagetone.

Not much difference in mileage between them. I had a similar choice 3 years ago and ended up picking the LX...so far/knock wood zero issues other than a set of tires and scheduled maintenance.

Take the vin number to a Lexus dealer; they can print the service history w/ far more detail than you see on line.

Change the AHC fluid if PO didn't have it done. You would spend major bucks if it goes TU, but I don't have the sense that that happens with a high percentage of LX's. Were I looking for a serious most-of-the-time off road truck, I would have picked the cruiser and upgraded the suspension.

Off road for me is not rock crawling, so I can get by with 285's and maybe a little torsion bar twist with no issues.

Only dislike of the LX is the difficulty in retrofitting audio gear since it has the Nav unit.

When I was looking for a truck last year I was hell bent on a cruiser only as I did not want the "fancy" Lexus. In then end I found many a used and abused Cruiser and then I found a cherry LX - never seen dirt and only the dealer service with all records. Could not be happier with it 30k miles later. AHC is ideal for city, highway and mild to moderate off road. I tow a boat and a 5000lb travel trailer and it works perfectly. The only thing you'll need to add is rear air bags for $80 and a brake controller.
 
How good of a deal is the vehicle?
 
Price is never aside..;)...Are the bolt heads rusted, prolly so. This will make working on the truck a PITA but stuff can always be fixed, that's why price is important.
 
i am guessing it is a NE truck?? The rust on the tail gate is typical for NE LCs that i have seen, not sure if it's because the salt on the road kicks up when the roads are wet or what. I think the culprit are the screws that start the rust. You might be able to change them out with SS and while you do so prep the area. Personally none of those spots concern me.
 
Where are you? If in the Northeast then you'll have a more difficult but not impossible job finding a rust free car.

In you are in a sunny warm clime than I would run away from this rig as fast as you can unless you can neg a swinging deal.

I'm from the Northeast and rust is a PITA no matter what anyone says. There's always more than what you can see on the surface. You'll be dealing with it forever.

Bottom line it depends on your geography, budget and time table. There's always a good deal out there around the corner if you can wait and have the time to shop.
 
^Bingo^ It took a month but I found my rust free LC in South Carolina, im in TX. $13k for a 2000, 108k miles and all service up to date and its black...
 
I vote for the LX.
 
I am in NE and I would not buy that truck. Eventually it will need a new tailgate, probably sooner than you think.

Look down south, drive or ship it home. My opinion.
 
2006 LC High Miles

I have presently two paid for LC's, 1995 and a 2000. I feel I have a good knowledge of the pros and cons of this great line of SUV. Both units were purchased with higher miles. 96 had 140K and the 2000 was something like 82k.

Tomorrow I am going to visit the local dealer near here to discuss a firm purchase price for a loaded 2006. Total miles 144k. This LC was used as a company car never as far as i can tell it was off road or haul a heavy load. The car fax shows scheduled maintenance was done like clock work. But done at another dealer also near me, so I plan on calling them to verify the timing belt was done. Very very clean car.

Issues, front brakes are down to 2mm, rears I believe are at 8?
Timing Belt? They say they did a complete inspection and showed me the bill which was $600+ mainly labor and an oil change.

I want to look under it tomorrow for signs of rust from Cleveland winters. All doors and tailgate show no signs of any rust or paint failure. Also look for oil leaks on the AHC components if any.
Dealer wants $25,900.

Long time no see or hear Pete! :) nice to see you are still in the loop sir!

Personally, knowing what I know now, there is no way I would buy any rig east of the Mississippi or north of the Mason-Dixon line.

I would pay extra and travel far to get the lowest mileage rig that has lived out west.

I've worked on enough rigs now and busted a 5 gallon bucket full of fasteners because of that damn rust. Never again!

That said, if the rig looks good--and that would require some eyes looking. underneath at rocker panels and the framerails--and it seems mechanically sound, then by all means pull the trigger.

That said, maybe you need a business trip to NM to follow up on some sales leads. ;)

I pulled the trigger after having the truck put up on the rack. The only and I mean only thing that looked slightly rusted was the mid exhaust muffler. All rails and brake lines were darn near new looking, fittings had minimal if any rust. I walked all around with a flashlight like checking everything. All shocks and the front boots , readiator looked dry and clean. Looking at all door jams, tailgate and under the hood all clean. The rear calipers and pads were serviced about 20k ago and the fronts will need to be serviced probably in 5-10k.

I have all Toyota service records and the previous owner took good care and it shows. So I spoke with them about the mileage and potential maintenance and we did the deal for $24k If there would have been any signs of rust, paint bubbles etc, I would have said no. Even the salesman said he was suprised they went so low. One time during the day I had my coat on and was ready to walk, That always make them nervous. I feel we both ended up OK on this. Time will tell.
 
Looking at buying 2003 100. 109k several service records from dealer but no timing belt.
2 owners, no rust, Texas car. New tires and has the nav unit Anything to consider? I can get it for $18,400
Thoughts?

Pretty decent price for the miles and year.
I would see if i could talk them down due to the timing belt not being done and being one of the first things you would need to do, IMO.
