Recently got rid of my old FJ40 weekend fun truck and am looking for a later model Series 90 or an early vintage Series 100 as a DD. Can someone point me to any previous threads, etc., which summarizes the pros and cons of each model and things to look out for when it comes time to purchase.

Thanks

By 90 series I'm guessing you mean GX, because we don't have a true Prado in the US. As for the 100, I've moved your thread to the buying/selling opinions thread, good place to start.

I think he might be looking for a Land Rover

I am in the market for an older 100. I am wondering if I should even be considering 98-99 models because of the weaker front diff. Is this a legitimate concern? When do they typically let go?

TIA!

I got a 99 because I wanted the rear locker. I then added a front ARB. It is nice protection and I also have a fully locked ride. Not sure what your usage is going to be...but just my thoughts!!! Lockers are crazy traction...

Cost of ownership 03-05 cruiser?

Cost of ownership 03-05 cruiser? I'm contemplating buying a 03-05 Cruiser and I'm trying to make some comparisons against my 4Runner as far as maintenance cost. I know Cruisers barely need care, but when they do I was curious about cost.

What has a 90k maintenance cost with timing belt set people back? Either dealership prices or local shop prices if you have em.

Do you have to run them with high octane gas?

Does that GPS, Navigation, Radio, Climate control, all in one computer scare people? If that goes down it's probably a 4k job to replace.

Would an 01-02 be more affordable to maintain?

Thanks,

Patrick

Rear Side Air Curtains 04-05 Cruisers

Are rear side Air Curtains standard or an option on 04-05 Cruisers? Most I see for sale don't advertise that they have them. When I call and have the dealer look at the rear pilar they see the "airbag" writing. So it's there, but not advertised.

Do they exist at all on 03 Cruisers?

Thanks,

Patrick

Optional on LC's '03. Standard on LX's starting 2003.

My 03 LC has curtain airbags, I don't know if there were optional or standard.

That's right. My memory is failing me. Corrected my post for accuracy.

Patrick,

I own an '02 and it is my feeling that all of the 100s cost of ownership will be very similar regardless of year, with the exception of the height control feature and other similar features that came in the later years. I have the OEM nav and it is my opinion that if you can find one that does not have it, you are probably better off. The unit is not bad, but it is VERY expensive to replace if it fails and you get better features with the newer portable units. Although, my wife and I really like having it built in.

Hopefully, this helps in your decision. Good luck!

I am looking at a 2000 LX with 120k miles, but the seller doesn't know if the timing belt has been done. It wasn't done at a Lexus dealer, so is there another way to tell if it's been done?

maybe it was done at a Toyota dealer...you could look at the Toyota maintenance history if you have the VIN...

is there a sticker around the engine bay somewhere???

No sticker... I looked up the Lexus history with the VIN but everything stopped about 30k miles ago

I have 3 remaining CarFax reports that expire 10/7/10. PM me if I can help with a report for you. I don't check Mud during the day, so give me a day or so to get back to you. Please reserve this for vehicles you're serious about rather than waste them on trivial queries!

i found a 2005 lc. 79k miles. no timing belt yet. will have to buy new tires in the next 8k miles. he gets it regulary serviced. clean carfax. pretty much a mommy mobile. we talked it to 24,500. has some door dings on the moldings which i plan to replace. is thos a good deal?

That seems pretty reasonable to me. You're not stealing it, but you're not overpaying either. I'd definitely buy at that price if you like it. Worn tires just give you a good excuse to upgrade to 33's!

I figure its a fair price for both parties. Its a clean california vehicle. I do like the idea about upgrading to 33's early. I've been looking into moldings on the doors and they are pricey. Has anybody had trouble taking them off? They don't sit in channels do they?

2004 LC Price

A 2004 LC w/80k miles was listed for 23k at a Ford dealership then it was sold at an auto auction. Now the same LC is listed for 25k at a used car dealership. I assume the new seller has it marked up to make a nice profit. Does anyone know what prices LC are going for at auto auctions?

Because of grad school loans, I am looking to get an older LC. I do prefer the 100 to the 80 (have had two 80's, and liked them). I have seen several '99 100's for 10-12k with b/w 104-120k miles. Several have had proper maintenance. Now, I know the 2000+ 100 offered stability control, but especially those of you with (or who have had) 98-99 models, tell me more about the "+'s" and "-'s" of those years. Thanks.

New guy here. I'm looking at 2 '99s with 127k and 133k. Both are in very good condition and have had timing belts replaced. Both sellers are telling me $12,900 firm. Are these good deals, on value, or priced high? How are actual selling values comparing with KBB private party these days?

Here are links. Actual mileage is 127k and 133k, respectively.
127k miles
133k miles

Thanks very much for input.
