So confused!
So I'm getting ready to get out of school, and I really want to get a new vehicle, I have a job lined up so I will have around 16k to spend on a SUV, now here is my problem, I want a 99-02 LC, or something that I can take off road when i go camping, backpacking and to the mountains in the winter... But i'm starting to look at 03-05 Sequoias in this price range, and i'm just not sure what to do... please help, can i make a sequoia look as sexy as an LC once i do some mods.... or should i be looking at some 4runners also

If you don't want a LC/LX I would look at the 4runner.
Seems like 100 series Land Cruisers are priced very similar to 4wd Sequoias of the same age. I would go with the LC unless you really need the extra room of a Sequoia, or found a screaming deal. Patience will usually pay off.
How about this: 2002 TLC w/ 115k miles. 90k service done (TB, WP, brakes, trans/diff fluids, etc.), has Navi, DVD. Not sure about the rear air. Emailed about more pics, especially of undercarriage. Looks clean from the pictures. Asking $17.5k.
Sounds high to me.
Well, the guy emailed back. Still no pics of undercarriage, which concerns me. Also, the carfax shows 4 other owners (he's the 5th). Just too many owners for comfort for me. I think I'll pass.
BTW, what's been the average price you've seen for a vehicle like this in your area (or generally speaking)? KBB and NADA says ~$16k.
how many miles should i get out of 99 100 series motor
looking at buying a 99 100 series with 150,000 on motor. Should I be worried that this is to high. It has the rear diff lock. and they want # 13,000 out the door. any insights would be a great help.

I just got a 99 myself. IIRC posts here say that the LC is built for 300k mile lifespan and can go further if taken care of. I had to drive 6hrs one way to get mine and paid $11,850 for it. It had 154k miles and rear locker and rear air. Just changed all the fluids except transfer case and diffs, and gave it a tune up. Runs like a new truck, quieter than wifes 06 sienna. You might be able to talk them down a little. I had a hard time finding one that wasn't abused. If you have service record confirmation of work done especially the timing belt that would be a bonus. I went to the toyota owners website and typed in the vin like it was my vehicle and could see work that had been done at the dealer.

I'd say $ 14-16K is probably about fair for that mileage.
Seems a little steep. I don't know what "out the door" means, but when I shop, I look at the price for the vehicle, as the tax/title/license is a given amount based on cost of the vehicle. 150k miles would not scare me, but I would expect to pay $10-12k, from what I've been seeing local to me.

This is my first post and I'm hoping to join you all as an LC owner. I currently own a 2001 limited 4runner. I'm shopping for a 100 series for a DD and in the distant future as a road trip and backcountry rig. Mods are a long way out into the future but they will be done some day.
I have two main questions:
1. I'm looking at a 1998 LC with 150k miles (all service records), rear locker, 3rd row seat, etc. I'm fairly sure I can get it for $11k.
Is this a good deal for a Colorado cruiser?
2. This will be my DD and I'm a stay at home dad of a 1 yr old (another will be added someday).
Would a 98-99 be a good choice or is the 2000+ with VSC that much safer? I currently have VSC on the 4runner and I don't have much of an opinion other than that it is noticeable at times.

ATRAC vs locker is a common debate here. Would you rather have your family in a vehicle with VSC or not? The question you asked is about safety and capability. ATRAC has never let me down, but it does take some time to learn it's limitations and little techniques to crawl over some stuff (off camber). There has been a few complaints about the VSC kicking in when you slide on ice or snow and causing an abrupt direction change(some for the worse and some for the better), so it also depends on your skill. You can always add lockers to a 2000+ rig, you can't add VSC to a pre-2000 rig.
Here is my 2000 LX470. 95.5k miles. More features than the 2002 LC (no NAV though; a plus by many people's estimation) ... better price too!

Thanks, willgabriel. But with shipping cost (or flying/driving back), it doesn't make sense. Plus the asking price of the 02 is $17.5k, so I'm sure it can be negotiated lower.

Just a quick poll: Forget rear lockers and TRAC/VSC--Which would you rather deal with: Blown front diff of 98-99 models or sketchy transmission of 00-01 models?

I purchased a 99 150,000 with rear diff lock. for 11,500 It is super clean and runs great. We are now a two land cruiser family. About 4 years ago I bought my wife a 99 with 60,000 on it (only has 75,000 now). Over the last 4 yeas I really fell in love with her LC. I hopped she would get tired of it and let me have my way with it. She has not, she loves it and wont let me touch it. I had to get my own. Lift, bumpers, slider, and bigger tires are on the way.
