Well...
I am very close to pulling the trigger on a 2004 TLC with under 30k miles for $30,000. Decent deal for my future daily driver?
just because the miles are low it doesn't justify that price. I would think in the $25k range would be high but reasonable for a one-of-a-kind pristine example. $30k? no way!
I just did a quick crazedlist search and found an 04 with 97k miles at a dealer asking $24.8k. I bet you could get that one for $22k with the current fuel prices. Also found an 06 with 64k for $33.9k. Again, I bet you could get that for $31k and you get the 275 hp VVTi. A 2005 with 89k for $29k. A 2005 with 72k for $29.9k. And those were just the top 5 listings that showed on a Land Cruiser search and all were dealer asking prices.
oh and here's a great one: a 2003 by owner with 91k on the clock for $19,995! that right there should give you huge bargaining power! 2003 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER I'm actually really tempted on that one!
I'm not trying to burst your bubble or make it sound like it's way easy to find the perfect LC for a sweet price. Quite the contrary. I've posted here many times that if you find a good rig for a reasonable prices then buy it. If you use MUD as your reference you'll always find someone claiming to get a better deal on a better truck. However... I do believe that $30k is too much for that vehicle. They're trying to capitalize on the low miles. If it's that important to you then maybe it is worth that price to you. But these rigs go 300k and an extra 30k on the clock would be nothing to me to save $5k in price. Either way I wish you the best in your purchase and urge you to pay cash if at all possible.
Personally I think 30k is a great deal for an 04 with only 30k miles. The numbers OregonLC shows above (assuming face value) bolster that point when you see:
04 97k for $25k
06 64k for $34k
05 89k for $29k
05 72k for $29k
Later models and lower miles both bring up the price automatically. Whether it's worth it to you or not is the question. To me, (again in my personal opinion), the tough question would be should I go for older vehicles with higher miles for a lot less money or should I go with newer vehicles with lower miles for more money. You need to identify your criteria and your dollar thresholds and determine what combination of factors is worth the extra money to you (newer vehicle, better condition, lower miles).
So, I wouldn't say that $30k for 30k miles is too high at all! But to OregonLC's point, how much are the low miles worth to you? If it were me, $5k more for 60k miles less is totally worth the extra 5k to me. Also, how many miles do you put on a year, are you planning to keep it for the long haul, are you planning to service it yourself, etc? If you're planning to keep it for the long haul and put lots of miles/year it might be worth looking the higher miles route. Also make sure you're familiar with the year to year differences in models - for example bluetooth is only available on 'later' years (can't remember if it's 03 or 04), VSC is only on certain years, lockers are only available on earlier years, VGRS (variable gear ratio steering) are only available on later years, sound system varies b/w early/later years, no nav on much earlier years etc. So depending on what you do/don't want, the years should also play a role in your selection. Personally I wanted bluetooth and VGRS and VSC so that narrowed down my choices.
When I bought mine a year ago, it was all about finding the latest model with the lowest miles for under $30k. And for me, the miles threshold was less than 90k b/c I wanted to make sure I baselined the vehicle myself by the 90k service point.
My $.02.
Good luck!
