I am playing with the idea of selling my 04 Tundra DC 4x4 and purchasing a slightly modded 93 LC. It is 3x Locked, 2.5 OME HD front, OME Mediumd rear, ARB front bumper, sliders and rear tube bumper w/tire carrier. 164K miles and just got baselined. $9,250.

What says the hive?

The 93 would be an FJ-80, so you'll probably get better results posting here: 80-Series Tech

Looking at a few LC/LX's here in Virginia and trying to gauge opinions.

A local toyota dealer has one with 143k on it for 13500. I'm going to have to grill them to see whether the timing belt has been done and other service. I was thinking a more normal price for this would be around 11k.

A private sale 00 LX470 is going for 13800 with 130k on the clock. Again I'm unsure of maintenance at this point in time.

There is one other LX, an 01, with 123k on the clock asking 17.5k private sale. Seems to be in good shape, but I don't think it warrants that much of a premium. I believe it is the original owner.

I'm going to try to take a look at a few of these today and one or two 80s to compare. Assuming I need to having timing belt, water pump, etc how much more should I budget for that and try to knock off price? I was thinking maybe the toyota dealer one might be a fair price if I had them do the service first.

I think you can do better on all account, although I didn't catch the year of the first LC you posted about.

I bought a locked 99 LC 3-4 months ago with 117k miles and the major service. Paid 11.5k for it. It took me months of digging to find it. Not the best deal I presume, but not bad all things considering.

Your timing belt, water pump, fluids, etc. major service will cost 2k +/-. I image it will be a "+" if you have it performed at a dealership, as they are generally higher than most mom and pops.

My LC's major service came with a sticker on the engine cover. The sticker stated the date, the mileage, and who performed the major service. I believe this is standard for dealerships.

Good luck with your purchase.

Thanks, pretty good information. The first one was an 00 model as well. I test drove it today, in pretty good shape. Drives tight and didn't find any glaring issues, but also hard to figure that out in a short drive.

Is that service sticker usually on the upper timing cover or just on the plastic plenum vanity cover.

I can't figure out how to edit my post sorry for the double.

I did not see the service sticker on the engine of the 2000 LC at the dealer. I'm somewhat wary of that. If I give the VIN number to a toyota service department would they be able to pull up all the actual service done on the car (assuming it was done at a toyota dealer)? If I go with this one I'm thinking of offering 11k and taking in for service to a local LC shop for the usual items.

I am moving to the Northeast soon and would like to use whatever LC/LX I find to also tow my other car (an older M3) on a full car carrier (uhaul) which is just about maxing out the the load rating when I also throw in four adults and some luggage.

plastic cover, although I've read they are put in random places. Random or not, it should be visible by simply raising the hood.

Not 100% certain how dealerships work, but it seem reasonable that Toyota - assuming they performed the service - would have all records in a database accessible from any Toyota dealership. I could be wrong.

Getting a Carfax may lead you to a particular dealership, as well. From there you can further investigate.

It is not unusual to ask a dealer if they have the contact info of the previous owner. It may be a long shot but worth asking. If they do, perhaps you can call them to see about major service.

Major service or not, it is a 2k+/- difference in value, something a dealer would identify in their sales pitch. If you strike out finding a sticker, no luck with a Carfax, or if you can't find the previous owner, then I'd assume no service.

There may be a way to identify the service by manually looking at the engine. I'm no help in this regard, as changing the oil is about the limits of my mechanical prowess. :)

178k How much is left?

Hello,

Im usually posting in the 60 forum and found this 100 series locally the other day. I was thinking about buying it but I have a couple reservations that hopefully you guys can help me out with. Its a 2001 with 178k on it, with factory nav screen. He wants 13900 but I got him down to 12000.

1. It has 178k on it, what is the life expectancy of the 2UZFE?

2. It has factory Nav screen that controls radio, heat, a/c, etc.... what is the word on all of this electronic stuff holding up ? I would hate to have to replace this it looks expensive.

3. What if any are known issues of this year ?

4. I read on a thread that it was all time 4wd? I also see a locker button and a 4wd lever?

5. Does he want to much for it?

I have read through some of the buying threads on here but am a bit confused, maybe cause there is way less crap on my 60 I'm not used to all this luxury. How would this thing pan out as a DD? Any thoughts or advice is apprecated.

Thanks

That's a clean looking truck.

I'll defer to pretty much everyone else on here who is more knowledgeable than me, but my 12 year old '99 drives like new.

I wouldn't worry about the vehicle's age or the individual components holding up.

Things like body rust, service history, etc, would be my main concern....

I don't have all the answers to your questions but:

- too much money - I would say something less than $10k would be reasonable
- locker button is not diff. lock but transfer case lock, with a high/low range (lever) - makes distribution of power 50/50 btw/ front and rear wheels
- known issues - do a search but nothing catastrophic - some expense items though: timing belt/water pump every 90k miles, starter contacts, cracked manifold, key cylinder rod breakage, rear A/C lines leaking and a few other smaller things are common
- not sure on NAV screen as I don't have one and therefore don't pay attention to those threads
- I think with proper maintenance (past and future) you could easily get 300k miles out of the truck

You can always ask your local toyota service dept to pull the service records via the vin#

Make sure the Timing Belt has been replaced otherwise you are looking at some $ to get it done.

I bought my wife a 2000 back in March for 10 grand out the door. When I bought it it had 136,000 miles on it and it was clean. It did not have the 90 k service so I used that to get a lower price. I put that grand back in to my rig so I guess you could say my rig cost me 11 grand. I think that guy wants to much money in my opinion. Just my 2 cents though...

Timing belt and water pump should be changed every 90K miles...so it's due at 180K...about $1200.00 at Toyota.

My cousin has a 2001 with 250K and it runs like a top. Blue book on it is 11-12K, but he is selling it, soon, for around 9K.

NAV is worthless, IMHO, but it's hard to find newer 100 Series Cruisers without it.

I am driving a 99 with 150K with no problems. My 98 4Runner has 250K with zero issues.

If well maintained, these should last well over a kerbillion miles.

That thing is really clean! That's the exact color combo I wish I could have found.

My 98 has 220k miles on it. In the last 20k it's needed upper and lower ball joints, CV boots, wheel bearings, and a Steering rack. It also had it's 3rd timing belt, a waterpump, new front main, new radiator hoses, and 2 new ignition coils. All but the upper ball joints and cvs were done by the PO. The truck runs like a dream, compression tests with 5 psi across all eight, and has super low leakdown numbers.

I wouldn't be hesitant if you've got proof of good maintenance. Have the ball joints and the steering rack checked, they can get pricey if you're not willing to remove the parts and press in new joints yourself.

If everything checks out I don't think he's terribly overpriced at $12k. He's definately asking top dollar but, it is a clean rig in a rare color combination.

Quick opinion needed

Is $9K a good price for a 2000 LC with over 180,000 miles.
Appears to be in good condition (but no maintenance records)
Some cosmetic work.

I am assuming that timing belt, water pump and other maintenance would be needed shortly.

Thanks.

I have never seen one go for lower than that regardless of mileage. I would say it is fair BUT for an extra $1000.00 I have seen a ton of 100s with between 30-50k less miles. Follow my logic?

Thanks for the response. I believe I'm going to get a great deal if it all works out.
If and when I take it home I'll post pics. Think wholesale price from a dealership ;)
